SUPER 7XRS
« on: 22 Nov 2014, 10:36 am »
I received my SUPER 7XRS with my SUPER 3 DESKTOP a couple of days ago. My review of the SUPER 3 DESKTOP is posted elsewhere. The shipment had been delivered to my office as I know it would be delivered (vs my home).

Given the size and weight of the package, I wasn't able to carry them on my motorbike or in the metro. And my wife uses the car to go to work and drive our daughter to her sport activity.

Bottom line: I was able to use the car only late last night to go to my office pick up the 7XRS'

It was midnight when I installed them. I hooked them on my refurbished Eico-Hf81 amplifier. Although it was 1AM when I was done and everyone was sleeping (remember this is Europe, meaning small apartments, neighbors, etc...), I could not resist the temptation of playing something before going to bed. Although it was some MP3 files from my iphone, they sounded awesome.

This morning, I've been playing hi-res audio files (I havent hooked the turntable or the SACD player yet) at a decent level (not loud, but close to loud...). So far, I've been playing Hi-Rhythm band's On the Loose, Black Uhuru's Dub Factor (mixed by Groucho Smykle, the same guy who did my Dubrising album, for a spectacular aural trip)

These speakers are superb. Great looking, great sounding. They fill the room nicely and the whole apartment is illuminated with music. Wicked!

After reading some comments on this forum, I was wondering if there would be too little bass. But heck no, they deliver and provide bass in abundance but don't crowd out the rest of the music, even for heavy reggae/dub, which is cool.

Very pleasant listening experience. The amount of detail is incredible, but it is not overwhelming the listener with information overload if you see what I mean.

The only problem is that it can be unforgiving: mixes that are not great sound poor.

Conclusion: it makes you want to spend entire days listening to your favorite records!

THANKS A LOT for the beautiful product, Louis.

Congrats on a great pair of speakers.  I find your initial description accurate and look forward to more impressions.  Also, when all settled in... your take on the sonic differences/similarities of each driver (RS7 &RS5).  + Pics please!

Enjoy those beautiful Omegas.  I'm considering the deepOmega 12 in level two or three finish.

I'll wager that you will find them more forgiving after 50-100 hours of play.

My wife played some of her stuff on the system: Pat Metheny, George Benson and it was absolutely lovely. And I'm sure she has hi-rez files on her ipod. I do, but I don't know about her.

I just love how the room is filled with music and how friendly music recorded in the US in the 70's (or Jamaica until 1985) sounds. I need to play some Dr. Dre tomorrow and then move on to A$AP Rocky and Chief Keef, then some King Jammy's late 80's dancehall and Junjo early 80's rubadub sound. If it passes that test, then I'll know I won't need anything for at least 20 years... For some reason, I'm optimistic.

My wife and I spent about an hour last night on the couch facing the speakers listening to some music. Her stuff, things like Pat Metheny, Fleetwood Mac. 70's music. It was a delightful moment that we hadn't experienced in so many years.

Now I'm watching the cones vibrate a bit more as I'm playing Dr. Dre's 2001 Instrumentals. No need for a sub. Maybe if I pushed the volume to max, but I don't really need to. Plus my neighbor downstairs has a nasty habit on calling when the music gets above a certain level...

Anyway, the speakers are a true joy.

Good to hear.  :thumb:

I just had a friend over yesterday and he was very surprised what the Omegas could do.  :)

Dr. Dre 2001?? HELL YEAH! You don't hear people mentioning that too often (like never) around these parts haha, thank you! What a stellar album.

Well done and enjoy!

I know! When I have time to waste, I post comments on youtube videos of rich guys showing off their speakers playing f&cking classical clavinet or similar "thin" music and keep asking what their gear sounds like with reggae or hip hop. I am being insulted with an alarming frequency by other commenters!!! Gotta love it.

Anyway, I am GLAD that the Eico has a knob for bass and for treble, because Robbie Shakespeare's bass is a bit heavy for the system (but is it the amp or the speakers???)

For instance, on this

https://soundcloud.com/tabou1/new-funk-riddim

and even more on this

https://soundcloud.com/tabou1/sly-robbie-new-funky-riddim

I had to turn down the bass a bit to ease the pain on the speakers, but they reacted nicely with a little less bass.

All in all, this episode made me realize something about my possible choices of amps in the future: I will need to be able to change bass and highs. I seldom see that feature available on amps or preamps. And I hate the EQ settings on the computers. So one more reason to like my Eico.
