Mac Mini vs Imac
« on: 1 Nov 2014, 04:25 pm »
Is Mac Mini still much better to use for music server in my Hi Fi setup over an imac with full solid state hard drive not fusion drive?

I would prefer to use Imac but I know in the past mac mini was the way to go.

thanks

I think, with this kind of question, it might be better to use the configuration that best suits your environment, and then try to optimize it to suit your needs. Personally, I'm an unfan of the iMac, I think you are better off just buying an external screen for the mini if you need it.

I have three iMacs and one Mini (and also sent an older Mini to sister). I like the form factor of the iMac for computing tasks (especially with the 27 inch screen), but the Mini is better as a dedicated music server. It's fairly easy to mod, quiet, and very reliable. But JohnR makes a good point about going with whatever suites your environment (and computing needs).

I agree with Atiplasma. I have both and recently changed the HD on my dedicated 2010 Mac Mini from the original to a SSD with clear improvement in sound. As I don't use the Mac Mini for general computing functions I used a 250 GB SSD which is adequate.
