Hi all,

I need an amp that I can install in my gym.  It will be installed between the fixed volume out on my TV and a pair of Salk Surrounds as L/R.  Key features would be remote control volume, a small form factor (i'm going to mount it on the wall or in the drop-ceiling cavity), ability to leave it on (or remote control off) and 80W+ per channel.  Can anyone give me a recommendation?  I'm having difficulty finding something that meets these specs.  I did call PartsExpress and they said they didn't have anything.

Thanks!
Will

80 watts at 8 ohms or 4 ohms?

I doubt there is anything out there at 80 watts at 8 ohms in a small case.  4 ohms I think you'll find one.

Emotiva is supposed to be coming out with a small remote controlled unit this month. My guess is it will be 50.80 watts like the Mini-X today without remote.

There pricey stuff from Bel Canto and Cyrus but they are only 60 watts.

Onkyo has an 80 watt receiver but it's full sized.

The one I have now, which doesn't have a remote volume, is 100W into 8ohms but I'm sure 100W into 4ohms would be fine.  Here's what I have now https://www.parts-express.com/lepai-lp7498e-200w-class-d-digital-amplifier-with-bluetooth-and-power-supply--310-298

Thanks for the ideas though ....... keep them coming  :D

I would take a look at this 2ch Onkyo receiver.  It comes with a remote and can be controlled with an I-phone.  What is your price point

As for price point, I'd guess up to $500 should do it.  I was really looking for a smaller form-factor than that if at all possible.  I'm surprised there seems so little out there.

I think the small form factor combined with the 80wpc is the squeeze.

There are small format 40-50wpc units that would otherwise do well.  Guys way more into math and science could elaborate on why doubling the power often does not make THAT much of a volume difference.

If lower wpc could work, Rega, NAD, Cyrus all come to mind around your budget, assuming lightly used could work.

How efficient are the Salks?  What size room?  What preferred volume?

Those answers would drive the need for 80wpc I assume.

He might need the power if he's running rather lengthy cable runs to the speakers too.

If you like the power, sound quality and size of the amplifier you have, you might consider adding a remote IR volume control inserted between your source and the amp.  Although you would likely spend ~ $100 to $300, it would probably still be a much smaller outlay than buying a new amp.

Keene VRC MK2
(This one might have to be ordered from UK)

Audiocubics R-cube
(The $300 one)

There are some others priced in between you could search for if the idea appeals to you.

If you are okay with used, you can find a NAD, rotel, or even a outlaw receiver for that price. I bought a used pioneer sx-a9mk2 receiver around your price point, and absolutely love it. Dual mono build, twin Toroidal Power Supplies, and very well built overall.

Thanks so much for the ideas y'all ........ I very much like srb's idea so I'm going to research that to confirm it works and if so, I'm done!
