AT33EV fans?
« on: 6 Nov 2014, 01:39 am »
I've been running an Audio Technica AT33EV for about a year now. I love the smooth, detailed layered sound this cart delivers, with plenty of dynamic slam (not as much as the AT150mlx) and bottom end. It just sails through most of my records and sounds especially luscious on well recorded jazz, highlighting vocals and horns in particular.

Not as finely detailed at the AT150mlx, probably due to the larger stylus size and elliptical rather than microline profile.

I'd love to hear your impressions on this gem (relatively inexpensive as MC carts go) and possible comparisons with it's sister, the AT33PTG, which is the same body / motor but with a microline stylus like the AT150.

There's a lot of love out there for the 33EV, especially over at the Asylum.   With a .2 x .7 elliptical it's not giving up much detail, more in vertical contact area, but the biggest difference is the tapered aluminum cantilever instead of boron.  That changes the emphasis from analytical to a warmer sound.

I think AT was responding to criticism of the AT house sound being overly bright and clinical.  Seems they did a good job in voicing the 33EV.  It's been very well received.
