Magnavox Tube Console Help
« on: 14 May 2014, 02:11 am »
Hi All,

My neighbor inherited an old boarding house in Philadelphia. It was owned by his late brother and sister who each had apartments in the place.
I arranged with him to help empty out a whole lot of old albums and in his brother's apartment was this old Magnavox console with a tube preamp, tube amp, tuner, turntable and I what I think are field coil drivers.

Anyone know much about these?

Looking to sell or possibly have it rebuilt.

Any vintage tube guys in the Phila, S Jersey area?

Thanks,

Chris

These are just a few of the pics I could quickly snap since we had to get back for an appointment.

That's a nice one!  Definitely worth fixing up though it won't be worth much dough.  You can find these consoles on Craigslist all day long for cheap.  Most people pull the amps out and redo them or sell as fixer-uppers.  Do you know if it's stereo or mono?

Hey!

Don't underestimate those old console amps. I'm not sure what kind of amp is in there. Look like those tubes could be 6V6 or 6L6 tube, I see two set of speakers so it could be stereo and push-pull one I think. Anyway if it is stereo than the amp is worth checking out and maybe restore, it will make a nice little stereo tube amp. No, don't expect it to compete with much more modern tube amp but some old console amps sound pretty good.

Take care,

I have been searching around and I found that the amp (148 AA) is a bi-amp configuration.

Here are a few quotes from the Antique Radio Forums,

"that is two amps on one chassis a bass amp and a trebble amp with a crossover built on the amp chassis."
" Six 6V6 tubes in P.P./parallel for the bass channel, and two 6V6 P.P. tubes for the high frequency channel. "

Some great pics can be foung here.

I wonder if this amp can be converted to a 2 channel amp?

Also I think the speakers are a field coil design?  :dunno:

Thanks for the help gents  :)
