Modwright 9000ES Questions
« on: 30 Aug 2004, 06:27 pm »
Hi,

This is my 1st post on AC.  Been lurking around for a few weeks and really enjoy reading all the posts. :D

I just got my 9000ES back from Modwright with the latest 9000ES Mods.  I know it takes a few weeks  for breakin but it is already sounding very good.

I have a couple of questions:

What is the life span of the tubes?  Should they be powered on all the time or turned off when not in use?

Is there a good source for these tubes?  I would like to purchase some extra tubes for backup.  Also wondering what they cost?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tom

Dan is in Canada at the moment.  You can purchase replacement tubes through modwright.  I have Tungsol 5687 tubes since last November 2003 and it is still working :D   I have 3x pairs that I use for "tube rolling".  I turn mine off whenever it is not in use as it does not take long for the tubes to warm up specially if you have the new "hotrod" powersupply :D

Tubes for the 9000ES

Hello,
I have had the modded 9000es for about four months now and have rolled out several tubes. Including the TungSol 5687, Amperex 7119 and the Bendix 6900. Altogether, I found the Amperex 7119's to be the most musical. The 6900's to be a bit more forward and bright and the 5687's to be the most neutral.

But what concerns me is the back ground noise of the unit in general. I really don't notice the noise as much while the unit is playing as I do when it is not. A friend recently pointed this out and has caused me to pose this question here.
Has anyone one else noticed this?

Please advise,
Dj

Mine is dead quiet.  I don't know if having the latest improvements in Dan's mods has anything to do with it or not.  I also have have the Cryo Treated umbilical.

Noise

Hi DJ, if your unit is noisy, then we shold take a look at it. I HAVE revised the mods recently and made some significant improvements.  We charge a nominal amount (listed on our website) to upgrade older modified units.

The biggest difference is that we bypass the DACs and I-V op-amps, as well as ALL stock analog filtering.  We use two poles of filtering to remove the ultra HF artifacts, given that we are pretty much taking the 'raw' signal from the VC24 chip.  It is a significant improvement sonicly.

I believe that you did receive the most current PS design.  There may be other issues going on in your system.  Please e-mail me directly to resolve this.

Thanks,

Dan
