Jay,

I could do that if either the OPPO or the AVR preamps had had two full range outputs for each of the left and right main channels.

That's what the stereo sub outputs on the linestage preamp are, a second pair of full range left and right outputs. That way you can send one set of signals for each channel to a power amp and if you had two subs you could set one up for each channel.

The only way I will get to hear the N3's with the tube amp is if either I finagle a day off sometime when my wife is at work (unlikely) or she goes out of town by herself. She may be going out of town for a day at the end of June so I might get my chance then.

Mike

I get what you are saying, but I thought you'd only need to send a single left output to  the left sub and a single right output  to the right.  Do you have to occupy both   the left  & right input jacks on the sub amp ?  If it is just a matter of having both input jacks populated, you could use a Y adapter but I don't think you'd even have to do this.
Less gain due to only  running a single  channel of a preout to the amp , maybe but  with 2  subs, I'd think  you'd  still be ok
Like I said above, maybe I'm missing something obvious,  like will  only running  the one input  damage the  sub amp ?

I've been considering  building  a single H frame   to pair with my OB7's   but was hoping to evenually /possibly add a second down the road and this is   how I had planned to eventually run  them ( I only hae the  single varable pre-oout on my  amp)

That's why I'm building my system for music first and HT second. The philosophy is that what is killer for music will also be at least exceptionally good for HT.

For music my goal is a 2.2 channel system with stereo servo subs. For HT I would build matching center and surround speakers. That way I would not need two sets of main speakers. To keep the front balanced for HT I would need a third matching monoblock for the center channel. The switch would be needed so that when listening to music the OPPO's outputs are feeding the monoblocks but when watching movies the AVR's analog outputs are feeding monoblocks. The AVR would feed the surround channels and LFE sub directly.

That's the plan anyway.

Mike

You can share front speakers in an integrated HT/2-channel system, but that's it. I even have separate subs for each system --an OB servo sub for 2-channel and an HT sub -- because they serve different purposes. You'll need a high quality source for 2-channel. Oppo is great, but it's primary function is to play movies. If you were building a separate 2-channel system, you wouldn't consider using an Oppo as your source.

Jay,

We are both saying the same thing, just differently.

The preamp I am looking at has two pairs of outputs. Each pair has one output for the left channel and one for the right channel. One pair is labled for the main speakers and the other pair is labeled for subwoofers.

If using two subs, one for each channel, than one interconnect from the subwoofer output pair would go to a line level (RCA) input on one of the subs (one interconnect per sub). If you are only using one sub you would connect both interconnects to the same sub.  If the sub's amp has both right and left RCA inputs you could connect the two cables directly. If the sub only has a single RCA input you would use a Y adapter to connect to the sub.

The way I understand it, if your preamp only has one pair of outputs you would need a Y adapter for each channel at the preamp so you would end up with two interconnects for the left channel and two for the right.

Got it  :slap:

Sorry Mike,  I had just finished watching  6 hrs of hockey (again) and obviously wasn't paying close enough attention ....  I was thinking integrated amp , not pre amp which was why I was wondering why you felt you needed  2  sets of pre-outs.
You are right, we  were both saying  the same thing,   I just hadn't grasped what you were saying
