iPad photo transfer help needed
« on: 27 Apr 2014, 09:30 pm »
I debated whether to post here or on the Apple Core but that Circle is about music and my question is not hard-core Apple (Mac or Mini or music software).

I want to show my mother pictures of my vacations to America's wonderful natural parks.  She does not have an internet connection so I thought I would load my iPad.  I created separate folders on my desktop with just a few of my photos from each park. I thought that would be easier than trying to manage them on my iPad.

I can transfer one folder from my desktop to the iPad but when I transfer another folder, it replaces the first one.  I transferred 5 folders before I found out each successive folder replaced the previous one.

I am using iTunes and the sync cord that came with the iPad. My path is Devices>iPad>photos>check the sync box>choose folder from the up/down window next to the sync box >sync/apply.  All folders is always checked.  Choosing "selected folders" is not available (grayed out) but it only transfers the folder I have selected from "my photos" on my W7 computer. Transfer works but I can't find a way to save each folder before transferring another one.

Sorry if I am dense but I do not use iTunes and it is one major reason I hated the Mac Mini I borrowed.  I do not find it intuitive.  I wish I could copy/ paste like on "real" computers.

Thanks for any help.

I think the problem may be that checking All Folders relates to all of the folders off a root folder.  When you browse to a new folder to sync, it replaces what is on the iPad with the new folder location.

Make a folder on your Desktop such as "Mom's Photos", then put your subfolders within that folder.  When you browse to "Moms Photos" on the Photos sync page, the All Folders checkbox will apply to all subfolders within that selected folder.

Steve,

Thanks,  I get it.  :thumb: Make one big folder with all my vacation photos in it.  I wanted to keep the folders separate because they are different locations (National Parks) but the iPad displayed the photos in each park folder by date anyway.  Meaning multiple days in a park were shown by date so all the parks will not get mingled.

That helps for now but there should be a way to create multiple folders on the iPad. That could be useful to me in the future. I am 95"% where I need to be but I am missing one piece of the puzzle.

Yes, but what I was saying is each park's selected photos are placed in its own subfolder within the master folder.  When you sync that master folder location with All Subfolders checked, on the iPad you will first see the master folder (containing all of the photos) followed by a folder for each park.

The folder (Album) list would look something like this on the iPad:

Camera Roll
(photos taken by the iPad's internal cameras)
Mom's Photos (100) (or whatever you named the Master Album Folder)
Grand Teton (25)
Redwood (20)
Rocky Mountain (15)
Sequoia (25)
Yosemite (15)

You can also create folders (Albums) on the iPad itself by clicking the + under Albums, naming the new Album and saving it.  It will then allow you to select photos from other Albums to add to it.  You can also later add other photos to an album created on the iPad by selecting the Album, touching the Share/Open icon (rectangle with arrow) and touching the Add button.

On the iPad you will not be able to add photos to albums that were created by syncing from the PC, only the ones that you manually created.

I agree with Don-S. OTOH, nowaday, most TV and cheap blu ray/dvd player have usb or at least can read data disc pictures. For older people, I found out that this is the easiest way to share my pictures with them. They just plug in the usb stick or put on the disc, press play then they are good to go. Easy for me and for them too. Just my 2cts.

Steve,

Thanks for the tips. I get it.  I don't copy and paste individual pics into the folder I create on the PC. I copy and paste the entire folder (e.g. Glacier NP) thereby creating a sub folder. Then I sync the main folder to my iPad.

What happens to synced photos on my iPad when I try to add new ones from my PC 6 months from now? Do I have to rename and save the previously synced folder to protect it?

Austin08,  Thanks for the tips.  They won't work for the equipment (or lack of equipment ) my mother has but that is a great suggestion others might use.  It is too bad I can't do that because viewing the pictures on a larger screen would be a great way to go.

Do you have an Apple TV?  If so, take it when you visit your mother and you can synch the pix on your iPad and the television.  You can create a new version of the old 35mm slide show and you do not need to darken the room!

You could also try storing the pix in iCloud and (assuming you leave the AppleTV) give her a call and she can view them at her leisure.  AppleTVs can be found for $90-$100.  We use ours all the time.  Remember the bad old days when it cost $20 to buy a roll of film and get it developed?

You will have to maintain the PC sync folder location, name and content to preserve what's on the iPad.  You can add new photos to existing subfolders and also add new subfolders.  If you remove photos from one of the subfolders, they will be removed from the iPad.  If you rename or move the PC sync folder, the photos will all be deleted from the iPad.

If you want to be able to easily copy photos to and from the iPad without the idiosyncrasies of "syncing" there are third party programs that will let you do it such as CopyTrans Photo ($20, or $30 for a 4-Pack Suite of CopyTrans, CopyTrans Contacts, CopyTrans Photo and CopyTrans TuneSwift).
