I work outside and out of the back of my truck for a living. I'm a farrier for anyone that has experience with horses.
I'm looking to put a stereo in the back of my truck. I could always just put a second car stereo with car speakers back there. But I'm going to do something 120v instead.
The source will be my Iphone.
I'm considering a multitude of portable Bluetooth set ups. I was also considering a couple of small book shelf speakers  with a finished chip amp. But I think it would look too clunky ( I want neat) and I'd like some bass as well. Sort of like Bose manufactured bass with out the cost.
I'm really pretty pretty up in the air and am seeking thoughts from fellow audio folks.
This has no need to be hifi quality but I certainly wouldn't complain if it was.   

The less nooks and crannies the better. This set up will be treated poorly by the nature of my job. Think dust and fine metal shavings.

I'm thinking along the lines of the Fluance FI50

Maybe something a little more ruggedized, like the Ion Job Rocker™.

Mono (who needs stereo for that application?), 6.5" woofer, removable IEC AC cord, convenience outlets, internal battery if you need it, metal grill and roll bar, metal corners, handle, etc.

 

I'm sure there are other outdoor job-type units out there as well.

Not a bad idea, and there is a black one on ebay for $80 or so.

Any other thoughts, off the wall or not?

We ran one of these for years, never an issue. It got rained on, bashed around badly, fell a few times, etc. Always worked, always sounded great. Charges and can run on Dewalt batteries, too.

I work construction and went withone of these: http://usa.yamaha.com/products/live_sound/speakers/active_speakers/  I went big, but the smaller ones are cheaper, sound is great!  Adding a bluetooth dongle for about $20 gets you wireless...  Huge volume output, excellent sound!  cheers

Although DeWalt does make a jobsite radio with built-in Bluetooth (DCR006), it is a much smaller speaker than the full size DCR015.  They do have an external Bluetooth module (DCR002), but of course that needs to be charged up with 5V USB.

Bosch has the PB360C Power Box with Bluetooth and it has bass and treble controls (and apparently a "subwoofer"! ).

 

The nice thing about these radios from power tool manufacturers is that they can use the same rechargeable Li-ion power tool batteries when going portable.

No, but the dual-purpose bottom mounted woofer does provide bass and vertical takeoff!

Thanks for the ideas. I'm not needing something that is portable and might get knocked around. What I'm going with right now is a quality PC 2.1 system. I've selected a few that have pods that control both volume and bass. It will probably exceed my needs so I should be OK.

  yeah, it won't see much abuse. It will be under the cover of my truck cap and screwed in place 24/7. The worst it will see is the aforementioned dust and what ever moisture might be in the air.
