Spike it !
« on: 23 Mar 2014, 03:53 am »

Hi all.
I wasn’t sure if should post this on Danny’s GR Research or Louis Omega circles.
I bight the sub-woofer from Danny, even if they are Eminence and I bought the Omega extended range driver from Louis.
So, I’ve decided to post this on “ Enclosures “ because it is an enclosure, even if it is an open baffle enclosure.
I am sure this post will make Danny Ritchie smile, because many times he told me that wheel are no good on an enclosure, especially with sub-woofer, well he did not use exactly those words, but that’s what he meant.
It’s what I call a combo, rubber feet for ceramic tiles floor
and retractable spikes for hard wood floor.
Since I have carpet with ceramic floor underneath, I decided to use the rubber foot.
Unless someone object to my thinking?
I am open to suggestions.
Now, did it make any improvement on the sound?
Maybe yes, maybe no, but right now, I can’t hear any improvement, but as usual, that’s me and me Guy 13, I am not very good at hearing improvement unless it’s huge.
But, if that’s the way to do it (As per Danny (Audio God) Ritchie)
I will do it.
Regardless of the results.
Rubber feet at Dung Audio are 0.50 USD each.
Spikes made in Vietnam at a local machine shop according to my own design were 1.50 USD each parts and labor.
When it comes to small uncomplicated and straight forward things like that, I love the cheap Vietnamese labor.
Below a few self explanatory pictures.

Try the spikes directly into the carpet and see if you hear a difference.  I've found spikes through carpet, even on to hard surfaces like concrete, improves the sound.  IMHO using the footers under the spikes makes it no better than the rubber feet you had.

Hi Mister 98
I will try one cabinet with spikes in the carpet
(As you wrote above)
and one cabinet with the rubber feet on the carpet.
What you call the footer is the penny like thick thing
that the pointy end of the spike sits on?
If that's what it is,
it's just there for the picture to show what it looks like,
I don't use them.
Will get back to you in 24 hours with my report.

Hi Guy. your on the right track. Decoupling the speakers from the floor will make an improvement in bass and free up the top end. For a manufactured product Herbies are highly recommended. Try decoupling your equipment rack as well. Have fun trying.

Hi Charles.
I know about Herbies fine products, but can't afford them,
that's why I make or get made my own small audio stuff.
You did not see it in the pictures, but the six legs supporting my audio rack
is mounted on rubber doughnuts.
This afternoon, when I get back home,
I will try the spikes thru the carpet suggestion.

Hi Charles.
I had fun trying...
Did what you wrote and after that I sat down
and listen for about 30 minutes or two CDs which ever comes frist
and...
Not sure if the bass has improved,
it sure did not degrade.
Maybe it's better,
I will have to do more listening...
But that's me,
it's never easy for me to hear any improvements to the sound,
unless it's a huge improvement and huge for someone,
does not automatically mean huge for me.
Thanks anyway for the suggestions,
I am sure it did not hurt the already very good quality of the sound
of my system.
