How does one get a better seal with the ear canal when using IEMs? I have a pair of cheap Panasonic IEMs. I have tried all three sizes of tips. While one size is better than the other two I noticed that when I press on them with my thumbs the sound ripens up.

I am hypothesizing that this is due to a better seal with the ear canal hence the question.

What kind of tips?  Tri flange?  Foam?

I have found only the foam tips seal well enough for me with my Shure iems.

Yeah, this can be a matter of both the size and type of tip.

What kind of tips do I have or what kind do I want? I have the tips that came with the $10 IEMS. What type of tips do I want? I have no idea, hence the post.

It is different from person to person what works best. Some of this seems to be personal preference. But it can also have to do with the shape of your ear canal. Many people like the foam Comply tips. I have also had success with them. But since they are foam you need to be a bit gentle with them. Currently I am using the Westone Star silicon tips. They work great for me. Other folks sweat by double or triple flanged styles. Maybe it would be possible to find some sort of variety pack?

Sorry but you need better IEMs with a better tip selection. The foam types will seal better than the standard tips because they expand to fill the canal after you squish them down. But for me they aren't all that comfortable as they put pressure on my ear.
If you look to new IEMs, I have found the Klispch oval gel tips to work extremely well and they are very comfortable.

I'm not a big IEM guy, but I do love the Comply tips. I agree with what Timind said, though, that they can put pressure on your ear...so be sure to get the variety pack they sell with different sizes, and then when you reorder the tips (assuming you like them) you can get only the size that works.
