Guy,
Hi Double j.

First, never trust a salesman.
So, since I am a salesman, no one should trust me ! Humm mmm...

It might be the powerful unit you can get from him or it might have been the most powerful at the time you bought it but given that it is only a G router I can confidently state that it is not the most powerful router out there.
Thanks, good to know.

Since the Linksys router you have does not support the N protocol, buying a N protocol repeater won't help you.
Is that so ? Well, if you say so, I believe you.

If you post links to the products you are considering and I'll let you know what I think....but I still think Option 1 (replace the existing Linksys router with a new wireless N router) is the best approach. If for some reason that doesn't solve the problem you should be able to take it and turn it into the wireless repeater you will need by installing open source firmware (called DD-WRT or Tomato) onto it. It's not hard to do but you do need to follow the directions precisely.
How about if I push my luck by asking you to suggest me a make and model, so I can buy it from Amazon.
Amazon is the only place I can buy all kind of stuff without any problem what so ever.
Then my wife's aunt could bring it with her on the first week of April.
How does that sounds?
Is it too much to ask?
Waiting for your answer, comments or what ever you have to say and/or suggest.
Thanks in advance.

Guy13,

Let me peruse Amazon and send post a few links. Can you confirm that you want a wireless repeater? (also known as a wireless extender)

http://www.tested.com/tech/web/454692-best-wi-fi-extender-if-youre-out-wired-options/

Can you post the model of your Linksys router? I have a fifth idea which may be worth trying. If it's one of the older blue models you could unscrew the antenna on the back of it and replace it with a higher gain antenna to see if that solves your issue.

Hi (Again) JJ or Doublej.
Thanks for the link, it's very informative,
it made me a little less ignorant about WiFi, router, extender
and all those technical words that are new and mysterious to me.
Here is the information on my Linksys:
Wireless G
Model : WRT54G
Broadband router
Here what it looks like.

Just in case you don't believe me on the information I supplied you with
or I made a mistake...

I like the idea of a ASUS RT-N56u at 100 USD,
then if the ASUS is still not strong enough, just use my Linksys
as a repeater mid way between the ASUS and my Grace and my laptop.
Here are a few picture of what my house, we live on the third and fourth floors.
If I need to have a unit midway, it will be at the end of the stairway.
When I tried the Grace at that location, it worked fine.
Follow the guide.

My Linksys is between the two red suspended lamps in the back on the book case.

The Grace radio is at the end of the hallway.

While taking a picture of my Grace with my friend Shaun the sheep
I tried to connect with the Linksys and the appeared
on the screen of the Grace:
Enter WPA key
What the hell is WPA.
I hope one day they will stop using abbreviated name.
They have enough space to write it in full.

O.K. Now it's your turn and in reference to your option 5 with the antenna,
I tried and succeed in unscrewing the antenna of the Linksys, it the same type of connector as a cable for the TV.

An 8 dB gain antenna that comes in both deskmount and back of the existing router configs:

http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-ANT2408CL-Omni-directional-Antenna-connector/dp/B004UBUE2O/

As far as router recommendations the Asus RT-N56u you have mentioned looks good as does the next one up, the Asus RT-N66u. I don't know how much you want to spend. You might want to ask the fiber optic provider for a recommendation.

Here's the Amazon best seller list

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/electronics/300189/ref=sr_bs_1#1

If you like to bottom fish price wise here this TP-Link looks interesting but I not sure I would go near it unless you have a local source and could return it if problematic.

Hi 2Xj or Doublej.
Thanks for the abundance of information that you supplied me.
Very useful.
Let me digest all that information, then I will talk with my boss or wife,
the same person.
Then I will take a decision.
The Asus brand is very well know here in Vietnam.
The Asus RT-N56u around 100 USD is within the money
I have in my pocket for that project.
I am not sure about your option 5 with the longer antennas.
I think on Monday, I should know which direction I will take.
Thanks again for your precious help.

Guy 13

I am still waiting from you for the meaning of the message
WPA on my Grace screen when trying to connect to the Linksys.

Guy13,

WPA stands for Web Protected Access. The Grace is asking you if you encrypt the wireless traffic to/from your Linksys router and if so what is the password that is used. WPA mostly prevents people from using your wireless network without you knowing about it as they would need this shard (meaning all devices would type in the same one) password.

It is recommended that your router have encryption turned on.

While on the topic of configuring your Linksys router it is also recommended that you update the router to the most current version of firmware and have the Linksys administrative password (this is different than the WPA password) change from the default that it ships with.

My wife's nephew did that already for me a month ago.
He told us that the whole block was on our Linksys surfing for free.

Where can I find it? The unit came with no instruction manual.
If I put my radio 10 feet away from the stairs, it works with a signal of 3 on 5.
If I bring it 3 feet inside my office,
I loose the signal. That's with the Linksys being downstairs.
Therefore, I am sure that a basic model halfway between the Linksys
and the office should work.
I wonder if I buy two Asus entry level units would do
and I would have the whole set up with the N version (2.4 - 5Ghz...)
The Internet what a wonderful invention, when you are a informatic guru...

Next week, I will go with my wife to see what the computer local stores have to offer.
We have a Vietnamese that repair
and up date all our computers (Office + home)
that can program whatever I will buy.

Hi Doublej.
This morning I had a few free minutes and I was in front of my laptop,
therefore I decided to see what the reviews said about all the Asus router models.
Reliability and after sales service/support looks terrible according to the customers.
Once at the computer and/or electronic stores, I will/might consider other makes and make sure someone can help me with the configuration of the unit I will buy, because I am a real ZERO when it comes to setting up, programming and downloading anything that is computer or what ever you call it related.
Next Saturday will be the decision day.

Guy 13,

Yeah that can be a problem. Your best solution is to find a reputable local computer store and/or computer guy that will work with you to make sure that whatever you purchase operates for you as desired and if it doesn't swaps it out until you are satisfied. If you lived closer I'd offer to help you out gratis, but I am just not ready for a trip to Vietnam. Too busy at work at the moment.

BTW last generation's Apple Airport Extreme worked really really well for a friend of mine who needed a mega distance router for a Macbook for his 75 year old parents in their mansion but I don't know how well these routers play with PCs. It should be fine (famous last words). Amazon sells them for ~$70 but they too have mixed reviews. Some people love them some hate them.

Hi Doublej
I will get back to you some time Sunday or Monday.
Hopefully I will be in good shape,
because Friday morning I have to get up at 3am to catch my flight
at 6am to Hong Kong and I will be back at 1.30am on Saturday
and by the time I go to bed, it will be 3am,
therefore that's 24 hours without sleep.
On Saturday I usually spend the day with my wife at our showroom,
because our employee is off that day.
I might be able to have a 1 or 2 hours nap in the back store.
These days here in Vietnam it's 35 to 37C (Around 100F) and in Hong Kong
it's around 15C or 50F, therefore after 19 years at 30C+
with 15C I will be frozen to death...
Wish me quick recovery...

Guy 13,

Did you upgrade your router? Does it solve your problem?

Hi Doublej.
Thanks for asking.
What a coincidence, no later than today,
I went with my wife to the computer store and bought the
Cisco Linksys WRT54G.
Why did I buy that old model with old technology, you might ask?
Well, I already have one that's been working flawlessly for almost two years.
Never repaired it, never failed, never had to reset it, it's on 24/24.
That's why I bought the exact same model.
I saw on the Internet lots of bad reviews on the ASUS... :nono:
I don't really need hi speed or high power.
Bought it for 62 USD (Including tax) with one year warranty.
It's not connected yet, I don't want to do it myself
and screw up something, therefore, my nephew the computer genius
will do that for me this week end.
I will get back to you to let you know if it's working
or if it caught on fire and burnt down the whole house.
(Which is impossible, since the whole house is made on concrete.)
Thanks again for asking, will get back to you A.S.A.P.

Guy 13,

Did you upgrade your router? Does it solve your problem?

Hi Doublej.
At last, at long, long last...
Finally my wifi adventure came to an end today,
more than two months after my first post.
At first, I asked my wife's nephew to program for me my new Linksys wifi,
but after a week of trial himself and with his supposely computer guru friend
he gave me back the un-programmed unit.
My wife contacted a programmer for a computer store that we have used a few time to solve problems with out laptop at our showroom and he was much better than the previous little porky that we fired.
It took a long time before he could make a house call.
Each time I asked my wife to call him, he was busy,
at last this morning 8am is rang the bell of our door.
I explain what I wanted to do and he immediately started to work on programming the unit, but, yes, there's always a but when Vietnamese are involved in something.
Anyway, he had to up grade the firm ware, but it did not work,
therfore he had to call the technician of the importer of Linksys,
after that, he could not connect, and so on and on...
Believe me or not (I don't care)
It took him from 8am to 5pm without stopping for lunch.
He had a zillion problems which I cannot tell you what they are,
because I don't understand the programming language,
anyway, finally the wifi slave or repeater worked
and my Grace Mondo Internet radio work fine,
minds you I had a little problem entering the key pass word,
but I went on the Internet and typed :
Grace Mondo Instruction manual
and saw how to do it, because the technician could not do it.
Am I surprised? Not at all.
At the same time, I tried my laptop because he had changed some program in it,
so I asked him to put back everything the way it was before I put his fingers on it.
I tested my Grace Mondo with my Decware tube amplifier and at first it did not work, the radio could not find the wifi,
I've reposition the wifi unit a little closer
and the Internet radio found the signal.
With my sound system it sound good,
not as good as with some CDs, but listenable.
However, I will put the radio on my desk.
I also tried the Sennheiser HD-650 (300 Ohms)
and the HD-570 (60 Ohms) and they both work fine,
of course the HD-650 as a better sound, especially in the bass.
So, this his an happy ending story, not like the story of my Rega turntable and Bellari phono stage.
He charged me 300,00 VND, holy smoke, that a lot of Vietnamese money,
but in real money it's only 15 USD, yes, 15 USD for 9 hours of work.
My wife gave him 20 USD, because she says he work hard.
I think he sould have given us 10 USD because he've learned a lot with today's programming.

Guy 13

On Friday I am going on a 4 days vacation with my wife and her family,
as they say: When you marry a Vietnamese, you marry the family.
I will be relaxing in dalat city with the mountains, the pine trees, the lakes, the much milder/cooler temperature and with four women.

Hi Doublej.

My wallet will definitely survive, because my wife's aunt is paying for everything: Bus, meals, hotel, etc...
One thing less to worry about.
Next week I will post some pictures.
See you later alligator...

Here are the pictures of my Grace Mondo Internet radio
with the portable HD
and the USB jack in the back of the unit with the RCA output
that can feed an amplifier.
I've tried it and it works fine.
