Ceiling absorption
« on: 12 Feb 2014, 01:55 pm »
I've recently switched from dipoles to monopoles (mini monitors) in my 180 sq. ft.  listening room. As usually recommended, I found absorption works better than diffusion on the first reflection points (this was not the case with my Maggies). So I have the reflection spots on the walls treated, and am  wondering about the ceiling. I determined the general locations where the panels should go, and it's pretty tight nearby a ceiling fan, and the grilles for the IB subs. Part of the panels will be behind the fan blades, but the fan needs to stay for summertime cooling. I guess I could position the blades when not in use, to clear as much of the panels as possible. The speaker to ceiling distance is around 7' :

So my question is, will a simple 2" thick x 2' x 2' OC703 panel, covered in burlap, per side mounted flush to the ceiling, be worth the effort? Anything thicker will interfere with the fan performance (I used 4" panels plus spaced hardware on the side walls). The entire room is carpeted, but under the listening chair is a large laminate flooring chair mat, due to using an office chair and desk as the listening spot. So I could see reflections off the ceiling maybe causing a problem. As is, without the ceiling absorption, it is sounding great....but obviously every little bit helps. :)

Maybe. If I were you I would check out the Synergistic Research HFT high tuning devices. The demo at Rocky mountain was off the charts. Fpr $299 and money back guarr. check them out.
Recently installed up to level "4" and for us no going back. Level one will show instant results. Our system never has been so open and transparent. Not a dealer.

No thanks. Sticking with old school right now.

Much better absorption would be with BAD Panels and fiberglass (OC703). DIY made of course.

Some european forums, (never mind language :) )

If interested, can send PDF or CAD drawing - hole positions for panels 1260mm x 680mm (~50"x27")

I like how they incorporated a poly into that design on the page linked. I felt the diy polys I threw together did the best as first reflection treatment when I was using the dipoles.

So do you use that style panel on your ceiling? How deep is it? And I'm assuming you hand drilled all those holes....bravo :)

I'm using flat one, not curved. Similar problem as yours - std. ceiling height @ 2.65m.
And yes, very interesting job. Luckily there was a drill press, not hand-held one :)
With some imagination this can look very cool. Something like this (not mine pic)
