Dual 8" sealed Direct servo subwoofer enclosures?
« on: 21 Jul 2014, 07:15 am »
Hi. I'm ready to commit (be committed?) to assembling 2 dual 8" sealed subs using the GR Research 8" drivers and Rythmik's Direct servo amp. I have scoured AC, AVS, and the internet for enclosure blue prints/plans, but I keep coming up empty handed except that I have found that the outside measurements should be 20"H x 10"W x 14"D.

Is there a pdf file somewhere that shows measurements, recommended MDF thickness, cutouts, braces, etc? What are the recommended damping materials (No Rez? Poly?)?

I'd greatly appreciate any help in this endeavor.

Hmm. I've got just four braces....I suspect I'll need a few more, huh?

Thank you,

Michael

Michael,

It's my understanding that the GR version of the 8" driver (SW-8-16R) and amp (HX300) is for open baffle use only. Rythmik carries the two driver versions (DS800-3 & DS800-6) and amp (HX580) for ported or sealed use .

You could check with Rythmik about sealed box plans.  While they don't have any posted in the plans section of their website, Brian had posted pictures in this circle awhile back of the prototype he was working on.

Jim Salk is doing a pair for someone on the forum here.  Dual front-firing/sealed 8" Rythmik woofers...

I contacted Rythmik on 7/14/14  asking for plans for their CI kit#1, which is dual 8" and HX580 amp per speaker.
I got this response:

""""At this moment we don’t have any plans available for the 8” drivers CI Kit. We are working into release a dual 8” subwoofer so as soon the project is ready we can share the plans.

Best Regards,

Geez. First off...Thank you for responding.

I called both of Rythmik's phone numbers again. The second number (with no voice mail setup) seems to be the lucky one to call. I got a call back from Brian soon after I hung up. The double eight is not in its final stages as I had assumed. No wonder I had such a hard time finding plans. Duh!

Brian said things wouldn't be ready till October (maybe). Eventually, there will be plans for courageous DIYers and (I think) finished cabinets for those of us who suffer "million-thumb-itis".  I will cool my jets for a few months and somewhat patiently wait till everything is good to go.

Alternatively, I've begun to wonder if OB subs are suitable. I'd certainly like to hear from folks about the pros and cons of OB subs. My intention is to have two subs to support my monitors in my HT system. The subs will probably act as the monitors' supports/stands, though, this isn't set in stone. Even though this will be my HT system, it is used for music 90% of the time. I want to integrate the subs as closely as possible with the monitors.

So....what are the benefits of OB subs over their sealed counterparts?
