Which begs the question can CF be laminated?  I was under the impression that ALL laminated carbon fiber isn't really carbon fiber but is just carbon fiber look vinyl.

I did see a video (can't find it now) on how carbon fiber weave/cloth could be mached onto objects one layer at a time with resin but that's not laminating.

I think the term laminating in regards to composites simply means "layering" one material to another. I laminate carbon fiber/fiberglass quite often with epoxy. It's not vinyl, but real carbon fiber twill weave cloth. The term used in this process IS laminating.
The carbon fiber outlet covers are probably laminated with fiberglass to build thickness/strength without using multiple layers of CF which is more expensive.
