High Mass Plinth for Dual 1229Q
« on: 21 Feb 2015, 01:38 am »
I'm wondering if anyone in audio circle has modified their turntable by mounting it to a higher mass plinth

a la Lenco L75 or garrard 301.

                     ............................ Thanks in advance

I've done a few less expensive plastic decks. It's a fun exercise and the results are an improvement but they are still cheaper plastic decks.

Basically I would split the plinth and the horizontal seam. Trace the relevant mounting points onto ply or mdf. Layer up a few pieces for mass and rigidity and router out space needed for motor and such.

Paint and re attached. I would do it mainly for presents and other people. Image and impact are usually improved.

Thanks for your input Steve:
I just took delivery of a Dual 1229Q from Bill @ fixmydual. He has a template for for those wanting to mount a Dual Idler drive in a box of their own design. The template is reasonably priced (under 5 dollars).

p.s. here are some pics of my 1229Q. I just unpacked it.

Bill at fixmydual is great. That's a nice looking TT there, Fred!

You might want to contact Bill or even vinylnirvana.com. Nirvana has a cabinet guy who makes awesome plinths for this (mainly) Thorens TT's but maybe could fix you up for the Dual.

And Bill can send you a cutout for mounting, you can use it as is in your plinth or as a template for another mounting.

Fred: BTW: those pics looks so awesome I am jealous!
