And yet more storage...
« on: 3 Aug 2014, 09:38 pm »
With the storage issues for my CD collection solved, it was time to take into consideration a simple yet elegant storage solution for an extremely small vinyl collection. Looking at some videos on YouTube from the vinyl community, individuals seem very happy with a ready made product to store their records in - why re-invent the wheel and needlessly create more unwanted sawdust?

It turns out that the solution was already in use in my room from this big box store and a trip ensued to purchase three more storage units. One item that I did run across on-line with respect to these shelves was that a few corners were cut in production and were not as robust as the original units.

Originally, the plan was to purchase the 16 cube version of the shelf, but when I looked at it in the showroom and gave it the lateral "wiggle test," I would not want to trust a large vinyl collection on this stand - you do have the option to secure it to a wall with a supplied hardware kit. I wound up purchasing 3 of the 6 cube versions as they were more rigid than the 16 cube unit. As I was loading the boxes into the cart, it was very clear that these new shelves were not as heavy as the units I had previously purchased for my room. When I got them home and after unpacking them, it was blatantly clear what changes were made to this product after comparing them to my older units. Aside from the reduced thickness on the side and top panels, they have also had their depth reduced by 1/4 inch - down to 15 inches.

Old...

New...

Each cube can hold approximately 100 records so this will be more than enough room for the foreseeable future. It is an elegant solution to store vinyl on, but they do not look as good as the older models.

Be well...

Its more than strong enough. Just attach it to the wall or better into studs using screws and brackets. Attach 6 brackets 2 on each, one on top level and one on bottom level.  Looks good  :thumb:

Greetings dgarratt  :D

They do look good for a store purchased item - around $270.00 for all three of them. I just wished that the manufacturer did not cut corners as the previous model looked much better and was stronger.

No phono stage, turntable or record cleaner as of yet - I am going about this a little backwards here. I purchase the odd album here and there and am planning on staying with Bryston amplification for the TT.

Be well...
