Tablet recommendation < $200
« on: 23 Jan 2014, 02:00 pm »
Hey all,

Looking for a tablet for my daughter. Something under $200 would be great.
Her main uses would be using it to stream music (wifi) via Pandora and YouTube to her audio system, and of course play some games.

I was thinking about a Kindle Fire HD >>like this one<< for $140, but I don't know much about tablets outside of the Galaxy 10.1 that I own.

Any thoughts, ideas would be great. Thanks in advance.  :thumb:

Yes that would be a good option but go with the 16gb one as you can't add storage space to it.  This is probably one of the better more flexible 7" tablets out there. I know alot of people that own it and like it. Some have already upgraded to the HDX version and given there kids the HD one.

If you could squeeze out $50 more bucks ($250) you could go with the newer kindle fire hdx.

Here are some good articles -

Get the Nook HD plus 9".  Last summer Barnes and Noble made it a full function Android tablet.  It use to sell for $280 but now it can be had for $180 now for the 32gb version.  I bought 2 of them for $150 each over Christmas.  It works at least as well as our Google Nexus 7 original version.

Thanks guys.
I thought of something.....is it true that some "proprietary" tablets can't access Google?

Hard to beat a Samsung.

(And if you get a Samsung tab 3, 7.0, I have a really nice Hardcandy case I can send you for $30.00.)

Bob,

None of the Kindle tablets can access Google Play unless you root it.  I have a HD that I use for reading books that I borrow from library.  If there are particular apps that are must you can check if the Kindle app store has a native version - http://www.amazon.com/b?node=3427287011.

There are some options of side loading apps from Google Play store but that is a royal pain.  I had to load Mog, Squeezebox Commander, etc using the side load process.

The wife and I both have Samsung Galaxy 10.1, so yea....we're big Samsung fans.
I just don't know much else about tablets. Thanks for the offer on the case, I'll keep that in mind!

EDIT; I'll be looking for it Bill.  :D

I still use and enjoy a 1st generation iPad. It's fine for streaming, email, web browsing. There are many on ebay for < $200 and some 2nd gen iPads as well.

Bob, you can get a refurbished galaxy tab 2 7.0 for around 150 and a 10.1 for a little over 200 usually. I've bought both from Newegg and had no problems with them.

There are more options with tablets in this price range than I would have thought.
Certainly more than when I was tablet shopping, that's for sure.

Great information fellas, thank you very much.
