Upcoming 8" drivers
« on: 24 Dec 2013, 11:11 am »
First, Merry Christmas to you and yours Danny. Now here's a couple of questions about the upcoming versions of the 8" Servo Driver for use in sealed boxes: Will there be both paper coned and aluminum? And will it be offered in all three impedances---4, 8, and 16?

Drivers have been in stock for some time now. We have just been held up waiting on the amps.

All woofers have a paper cone just as pictured on our site.

4 and 8 ohm versions are designed for sealed boxes. And the 16 ohm version is for open baffle applications.

Great. And what are the optimum enclosure volumes for the 4 ohm and 8 ohm woofers?

By the numbers I get .38 cubic feet per woofer. But Brian has been using them in much larger air spaces. The air space effects the gain that the amp needs to maintain a linear response. It does not effect the response. So there is a lot of flexibility there.

If Brian is still testing then it sounds like everything is not quite ready for prime time yet with the amp and the new OB designs, correct?

Brian has completed testing. New amps have been completed. Some were flown in and some are on the water (or just landed).

Danny, do you have the mounting dimensions (over-all diameter, through-hole diameter, driver depth) for the 8"?

Danny,

Have you built/listened to one of these yet - with 0.38 cu ft/driver?  I'm couscous.

I don't recall. I'll have to pull one out again and take some measurements.

Brian has the 4 and 8 ohm woofers. The ones I have in stock are the 16 ohm version for the open baffle applications. So I haven't played with the 4 and 8 ohmers.

I'd like to know this as well.

Looks like 7.25" for the through hole and 5" of mounting depth is needed.

Over on the Rythmik forum, Brian has stated that he has the 8 in drivers and amps ready for sale.  I am curious about the enclosure size.  To my knowledge, the T/S parms have not been posted (other than VAS).

If I assume T/S parms similar to Danny's 8 in O/B, but with 4 ohm Re (and correspondingly lower Qes),  then for a 0.38 cu ft enclosure I get 0.62 Qtc (assuming a non-servo amp), with 200 watts driving near to Xmax for frequencies below 50 Hz.  The servo amp would of course make a lower closed loop Q depending on amp settings.  So this size enclosure would seem acceptable.  But I know that Brian has showed a larger enclosure size (more like 0.7 cuft per driver).

I would like to make several dual 8" drive subwoofers that are small.  I'm thinking like 4 to 8 of them that are 12"x12"x15" for a 2 driver box.  But I'm a bit worried that I'm missing something (as I'm quite  new to this).

One other question - would you use a 1.5" baffle for the front - like is done on the 12"/15" designs, or is 0.75" sufficient?

I'm also interested in these to mate with the desktop LGK's. Not sure how well that would work though based on Brian's comments about the 8" drivers needing to be crossed over around 200Hz.  But then I also understand nada about the electronics involved. I'm content to leave that up to Danny and Brian. I'll just build boxes and install parts.

You don't have to cross those woofers that high. You can cross them over anywhere.

Hey Danny,

Are there plans out there for a mini tower OB sub? Something small form factor or good to use as monitor stands? I am really interested in such an application.

OK, where is the Rythmik forum?  I checked their website and don't see anything.  When I googled Rythmik forum it sent me to a single thread on the AVS forum.
