class D integrated amps for Martin Logans?
« on: 16 Dec 2013, 06:20 pm »
Considering some changes to my system.

Class D integrated amps I'm considering are from Rogue Audio (Sphinx),  Wyred4Sound,  Bel Canto,  and PeachTree Audio.

Martin Logan speakers I'm looking at are the ElectroMotion, Theos, and maybe the next one up (Ethos?).

Wondering if there's anybody out there in AudioCircle land that has any experience, opinions, info. etc. using class D amplification to power "mid-line"  Martin Logans?    Thanks in advance - GR

Hi,

I am using ncore monos on Martin Logan Summit X's.  I have only owned the Summits for a few weeks and have not heard them with any other amp, so no frame of reference.  I will say the ncores drive the Summits with ease.  I am loving my system right now!   :D

I am curious as to how an Odyssey Kismet, AVA Fet Valves or Pass Labs XA would sound with the Summits.

I've been happy with my Rogue audio Zues and 150's (upgraded from M-120's), but I'm not sure about class D for stats. I have a pair of Sanders 10C's and from my understanding class D is a no no for his panels because of the poor high frequency response. Then again I've heard some decent reviews of some of the brands you mentioned when paired with Maggies in bi-amped systems. Do you have the option of auditioning?

Regards,
Jon

I have been using Class D for some time now with ESLs.  I had good luck with the original IcePower based designs, but eventually those were replaced by an old classic for driving ESL and planar speakers, a Sunfire Signature 600.  This provided a "fuller" sound at the expense of a small amount of detail.

Don't discount this too much, as those Sunfire Signatures are one of the all-time favorites for driving ESLs.  I am currently playing around with a second generation class D based amplifier, and it seems to be quite an improvement over the IcePower units.  I am still deciding which I like better.
