Upgrade Direction
« on: 12 Dec 2013, 12:19 am »
Looking to upgrade my front speakers, I currently have the jr mkII.  I like them a lot but would like to step it up a bit. I'd like to get into some well loved Annie's or 4 mkIII.  I could wait and buy them out right used or could snag some 4mkI or mkII and spent the money upgrading to the mkIII or Annie's.  According to Albert, sonically, the upgrades are no different than an original Annie or mkIII.  Or I might be happy with a nice set of mkII.  Thoughts?

Thanks

Todd

Todd,

As a happy owner of a pair of VR-5 Anniversary MKII's, you can't go wrong with any speaker in the VSA line. There are several models to choose from and of course, Albert can work with you on a speaker that will fit your budget, happy listening!

What I would do is go for a 4SR Mk2, live with and enjoy them for a while since the jump from jr to SR is already huge. Then the door is open to jump to 5 later on.

I've not seen Mk3s go on the block, Mk1s and Mk2s only occasionally. With the MK1s and Mk2s however you might luck out on African Hazelwood or Ebony. If you happened to come across Ebony with stripes, grab them quickly. Only 6 pairs of tiger stripes were ever made. They are gorgeous.

Looks like there is a pair of VR4SR mkII on ebay now, price looks a little high to me http://www.ebay.com/itm/VON-SCHWEIKERT-AUDIO-VR4-SR-Mk-II-REFERENCE-LOUDSPEAKERS-/181271980712?pt=Speakers_Subwoofers&hash=item2a34a6eaa8

No relation to seller on my part

Hoosierdaddy, I've been watching those.  Thanks for the heads up.  I would imagine they would negotiate some, what would be a fair price?

I would default to the experts here regarding a true market price. I don't own VS but have heard them and covet a pair...someday. I just know 8k is way too high.

Some time ago I purchased a pair of VR4SR speakers (not even the Mk-II).  Albert suggested that a good move would be for him to upgrade them to the VR5-Anniversary.  Now I haven't heard the VR4-SR MkII or III, but the upgrade to the Annis was a huge jump in performance.  If you find a pair of the 4SR's, I'd highly recommend the upgrade to the Annis when it's convenient.  Those magnesium woofers surprised me at how much faster and detailed they were versus the aluminum ones on the 4SR's.  The upgrade cost should be the same from any series of the VR4SR, so if you can find a Mk-I and you end up with the Annis, the net cost should be pretty reasonable.

G35, I have heard various VR4 iterations, and the new VR100xs at Axpona. I would love to hear the VR5 Anniversary and VR9. I almost jumped on a pair of VR4SR mkI a few months ago for 4k and change. Too many other projects in queue to justify at this point. I guess that is why I lurk here-to listen vicariously through this group of owners.

Kernalbob, I had basically the exact conversation with Albert as you did.  If Jack thinks the step up to the sr mkII is that great of an improvement over the jr, I may go that route.  However, I know I will wonder about the Annie upgrade, on the other hand that leaves me something to look forward to.

Hoosierdaddy, I would say if you get the VR100xs, we're all coming to your house.  And I know what you mean, I've been reading about everyone's sweet speakers for a while myself.

I moved up to the Annies from the VR4 Srs MkIIs and it was not a subtle improvement...even initially out of the crate.  I've seen Annies on Audiogon occasionally and as I recall the lowest price was $12K?  You'd be hard pressed to find anything comparable at that price or significantly more..

I'll be checking out eBay, agon, audiomart, audio circle and avs classifieds.  Any other sites, in the groups opinion, I should check out?

Thanks

I have a pair of 4jrs upgraded to the 4sr MK3s that I replaced with VR35Es.  I would be willing to sell for a reasonable price.  If interested, send me an email.

thanks

How do you upgrade jr to a sr?  I thought they had completely different cabinets

I'm thinking he replaced the jr with SR mkIII, not necessarily putting SR drivers in a jr cabinet. At least that's what I'm going to assume.  Sent a pm so I'll know soon enough.

Likely a typo. AFAIK Azhnut upgraded his Jr to Jr Mk3s. The Jr Mk3 didn't make it to market (VS stopped outsourcing cabinets from their old supplier) but the upgrade package based on the prototype has been around since 2008. They are all new drivers (SEAS, Audax, SEAS basically the smaller versions of those in an SR), XO and I believe bracing that negated the need for lead shot or sand.
