Modding an Ultra DAC?
« on: 25 Feb 2014, 07:12 pm »
I have an Ultra DAC that is getting long in the tooth.  I will upgrade in the next year or so to one that does hirez music.  I have been toying with the idea of trying some teflon or oil caps in the DAC just for fun to see if it makes a difference.  I was curious if any one has tried this.  It may be a waste of time and money but I will keep the DAC and use it in one of my other systems once it has been retired from my main system.

Hi Larry,

Be careful when you start playing with magic parts in your Ultra DAC.

First make sure you can actually find new capacitors of the appropriate capacitance and voltage ratings sized that will even come close to fitting on the analog filter PC board.

The output coupling capacitors are 5.6µF 250V mylar.  The capacitors in the gain set feedback loop are 4.7µF 250V mylar, input capacitor is 1µF 63V mylar, interstage coupling cap a 0.01µF 250V mylar.  The capacitors in the filter circuit are a 3300pF 630V polyproplyne, a 20 pF 300V mica and a .33µF 63V mylar.  .  There is also a 2.2µF 250V mylar cap in the connection cirucit between the tube output and mos-fet input, but this one may be hidden on the bottom of the PC card.

I would not expect that just cherry picking and changing just one or two of these would make much difference.  Actually I doubt if our original capacitor choices are sonic issues at all.

If you do not match part values channel to channel with a capacitance meter and select parts within a percent or two of what is there now you certainly will hear a difference, and it won't be for the better.

Please don't mess with the digital board.

Have fun playing with it.  If you break it we can probably still fix it.

Thanks Frank.  I won't be changing anything any time soon.  I have to buy a new DAC first and that is at least a year away. ( do you have any plans for a new DAC with a usb input and/or DSD?) Any work will be done by someone that knows what they are doing.  I have a guy that builds gear that would do it for me.  And I would only mod it if the mods could be reversed.

The Vision EC and Fet Valve DACS are available with a $200 USB in option right now.  They are good for up to and including 192/24, native with Macs, drivers included for PCs.

No short term plans for DSD buit in.  Simply add the $150 Loci DSD DAC to the setup.

Thanks Frank.  I did not know about the usb option.  I will give you a call as I would like to hear the FET Valve DAC again.  Can the DAC be built with XLR's?  I just bought another preamp, a used BAT VK-51se, fully balanced with only XLR in/outs.  The issue with it is that my current DAC is only single ended and I am using XLR adapters so the gain or volume has dropped somewhere between 3 and 6db because of this.   I am still undecided as to whether I am going to keep my current Pass X1 preamp or BAT which is a step up in sound compared to the Pass.

I have considered the Loki and it may be the way to go for DSD.

Frank,
Your website states: Ministreamer USB board for up to 96/24 USB input available as special order option.
Has this changed?

Eric

Has our USB DAC option changed?  Yes it has.

We now are using the miniSP USBstreamer board built in which is good to 192/24.

Thanks for the info. This is good news.  :thumb:
