LS - What power for amps
« on: 14 Dec 2020, 09:14 pm »
I'm considering building some DIY amps for the HT and was wondering what power levels I should be looking at.  I have a pair of LS6, A/V-1RS, and a LS-C.  They're not in a huge room so they never are turned up exceeding loud so I'm thinking I don't need a lot of power.

I've had anywhere from 15 watts to 2000 watts @ 8 ohms per channel on my LS6's. I prefer 200-400 watts as a minimum. I always design for 3 db of headroom. That means I'll be using 100-200 watts of power maximum.

My options are:
AmpA = 115W/2ohm-125W/4ohm-60W/8ohm
AmpB =  180W/2ohm-250W/4ohm-150W/8ohm
AmpC = 450W/2ohm-500W/4ohm-350W/8ohm
AmpD = 1200W/2ohm-700W/4ohm-400W/8ohm (probably out of budget)
AmpE = 450W/2ohm-425W/4ohm-227W/8ohm

I wasn't able to find the LS6 or LS-C on the GRResearch web site.  The A/V-1RS show as 6ohm 8-100W so AmpA looks right for those.  I did find an ad for the LS6s that states they're 8ohm so AmpC for them or would AmpB be enough?
Digging through old posts here it looks like the LS-C is 8ohm.  No idea what kind of power it should get.  Maybe AmpB?

I have a pair of LS9's, and although moderately efficient, the large number of mid woofers create significant back EMF.  Basically, not much power is needed to drive them, but a lot of power is needed to control them.  For the LS6's, probably 150 wpc would be advised.

Watts aren’t everything.

I have LS6’s that I ran with the big Emotiva Monoblocks (XPA-1) that drove then to satisfying levels but weren’t exactly musical. I tried a Classe Multi channel (CAV 150) and it was basically the same thing. Odyssey Kismets in Khartago chassis? Much better.
