Ipad as pure transport
« on: 4 Nov 2013, 08:35 pm »
I am looking for a great transport. Right now what I have works perfectly (Linux Mpd based PC) but it is missing few key requirements I have .
Looking at transport I came up with key three requirements as music wise…
•   Able to wirelessly stream my mostly FLAC and Mp3 collection from my NAS server. And should be able to remotely controlled i.e. I can select songs from my phone or tablet and it will run on that transport.
•   Able to run some app that can get music which I don’t have In my Server …right now I am using rdio it is perfect because it works in my office, and if an app is running  in same home network on different  pc  you can remotely control that app from different  place.
•   Able to some time let me listen youtube (bad quality) but I get to listen the song.

My transport can do only first one….

Now the hardware side of it.

•   Has no moving part
•    Emits near-zero heat and noise
•    Dead silent
•    DC or battery powered
•    Has unbeatable user-interface
•   Is as jitter-free as it can get.
•    Can be operated from a distance via a remote or an app

I have two ipads….and more I think more ipad seems to be perfect transport using camera connection kit (CCK)...couple of question I have

•   Can Ipad stream songs wirelessly from the nas server without any  PC running itunes in-between.
•   Can I remotely select song on different Ipad the way I am seeing is one of the ipad will be always connected to the dac.
•   Can it stream flac and dsd files down the line if I bring it….

I hate to advocate for "dead" products, but the Logitech Squeezebox solution works great for nearly everything you describe.  You don't actually need to purchase any of the Logitech Squeezeboxes.  You just run their LMS software (free for download) on your server and run one of several streaming apps on your iPad or iPhone.  Personally, I really like iPeng as that app - there's a version for the iPad and the iPhone.  There's anothe iPad only app called SqueezePad that also works quite well.  These apps can not only control a Squeezebox, but also stream to itself for playback or control another iPad/iphone used as playback.   It can definitely stream flac - even at hirez.   Not sure about dsd.

Of course, to get the best audio, you'll want an external DAC as you describe and there are solutions for that.

While Logitech killed the Squeezebox (a majorly dumb move on their part), the technology isn't going away.

Problem is my NAS is an CIFS based hard drive thats all...WD world 2tb thats all...so some app that can pick music from the hard drive...else i need to create a full blown server

If you are not shy about playing with Linux, there are several "cube" or "plug" computer solutions running around that would meet your needs.  Based on my own and others' experiences, none of them are plug and play off the shelf solutions, though -- you will spend a little time tinkering to get everything working.  I'm building one for my rv based on the Solidrun "Cubox", LMS, and Squeezelite player.  It will do everything you ask with the possible exception of DVD, don't have an DVD files and haven't tried it.  But there are other solutions on the same hardware platform that will handle it.

Some links to the Cubox wiki (platform I am using)

Three media player setups:

I am working on the LMS/Squeezelite server/player.

A search for "plug computer media server" will get you a bunch of links in several audio forums.

I run LMS on a dedicated netbook in my media closet.

I run a hacked Pogoplug using Vortexbox s/w as my player.

I use iPeng on an iTouch (3rd generation) to control it.

Not including the netbook (was around $200 used with 2GB of RAM) I am in around $65 including the $10 app (iPeng).

Totally silent, works a treat.  I have been running it 24/7 for around 6 months now, have only needed to reboot it 2x.

Does it run Internet streaming software like rdio???...i currently have a 25$ Dell PC acting as transport running Linux MPD...similar to VOyage MPD and i can control all the songs running from the iphone ,ipad etc...what i cant do is to run some rdio apps in that...
