If you're only using this for iTunes, you'll be fine.

Playing from a hard drive or SSD would likely not be a problem.  If you're listening to 24/192 files, that works out to ~ 65MB/minute so a 10 minute song would be ~ 650MB.  If you're enabling memory play mode in a more advanced player, you could have issues with very long songs or continuous classical selections.

Then it is a different model. Apple specifies maximum 2 GB RAM (MacTracker says you can fit 3 GB but i have had miced results with amounts > than Apple speced)

Can anyone comment whether this 4gb model would be adequate for serving DSD via USB using Audirvana and the Jriver GUI?

I'm not really mac proficient.
