Static sound from my VR-33
« on: 18 Sep 2013, 03:39 am »
I'm hoping I can get some solid advise on this. One of my VR-33 speakers has an intermittent static sound. It is only one speaker. I have switched my monoblocks, still there. I have taken all other equipment out of the loop, still there. I have changed and cleaned cables, still there. I have PS Audio noise harvesters, still there. i use the Shunyata Venom Defender in my BPT Pure Power Center, still there. As you can see, there is just a little frustration on my part. The only thing I can come up with, is there is a problem in the crossover? A bad cap, cold solder joint. Any and all help is much appreciated.

VSA, feel free to chime in. If it is the speaker, how do I go about getting it repaired? Do I need to ship it back to the factory? Please advise.

Thanks,

Gary

Hi Gary --

I feel your pain -  I usually think it's cables or preamps that cause this and had a similar intermittent crackle problem a couple of years back that I eventually tied to a stage in my preamp which had to be replaced, but not before going through tortuous cable and component changes to isolate it, which proved devilishly difficult (at one point even shipping the power amp back to another company for inspection since their suggested tests seemed to indicate the problem was at their end, it wasn't, but they practically rebuilt the amp before sendng it back, only for the noise to still occur, of course!). Even now, one speaker makes a noise for me if I use the 'wrong' balanced adaptor for a connection in the rig - it's just that one connector/cable combo, which works silently on every other rig.

I take it from your description that you really have tried everything -- including using different cables and the noise won't move, it just comes from that same speaker as soon as it's connected to either monoblock? Time to call or email VSA directly I'd say. I am not at all sure what could go wrong in the crossover but am sure others might have ideas here. No matter, I'd talk to the experts directly on this one. Albert and co do monitor this forum but it would be faster to go direct (PM me if you need directions)

Keep us posted

If you haven't already, just leave everything as is and swap the speakers. This will narrow it down to speaker or someting in that channel.

If still coming from the same speaker try to isolate to a specific driver.

If still coming from same channel, swap cables one at a time -  one channel to the other...or use a different set if you have spares.

Best thing to do is call me at the factory on Friday afternoon.  951-682-0706.  The static could be caused by a large number of things, but it will be easy to track it down.

No more problem!! The VSA team helped me figure this out. Nothing to do with the speakers.
