Outlaw 1.5 way vs. Single Driver
« on: 26 Dec 2015, 11:03 pm »
I would appreciate comparisons of the Omega Outlaw 1.5 ways vs. Omega single driver speakers. I have owned the excellent Omega single driver speakers in the past and I was wondering if someone familiar with the Outlaw 1.5 ways could chime in. Thank you.

Jolly !

Couple thoughts :

1) 1.5 OB will require a sub.   I prefer the Omega Speed12  in the sealed configuration.   I operate the 1.5 OB full range and cross the Speed12 @ ~60hz.
2) At least 4' from the back wall.   The more the better.   Dipoles need room to breath otherwise early wall reflections will mess up the sound field.
3) Single Ended Triode...   Own one if you own these speakers  :thumb:   The 1.5 OB are super efficient.  My 45 drives these speakers effortlessly.  I can't hear much of a difference between  8 ohm and  4 ohm taps.

Thank you for the comprehensive reply happy rabbit, but I wasn't asking about the open baffle, OB, but one of the Outlaw 1.5 monitors. BTW how much room do the Speed 12's need around them?

I think that the Outlaw 1.5 comes in 2 configurations.

1. OB
2. Sealed box.

Both have the lower producing 500hz and below.

And then if you are looking at dual RS5 driver, there's also the Bipole/Dipole version. That's what I do have and it is fantastic.

The 1.5 Omega Outlaw monitor simply trades point source advantages (better imaging with no phase errors) for higher cost, larger size, more potential sound pressure (volume) output, and 4 or 16 ohm impedance.

A better solution IME would be a 3i Monitors with a sub.

Doesn't 3i with sub produce much more phase errors and imaging issues than two RS5 in close proximity?  Of course, one can use DSP such as DIRAC or DSpeaker to reduce that but I think the 1.5 probably still sounds very much like a point source.

Hi Jolly,
I have the pair of Outlaw 1.5 Way Towers shown on the Outlaw speakers for sale page. I previously had a pair of Super 3XRS speakers with the hemp drivers. I put those up for sale as they were lacking a bit of bass for my tastes. I then was using a pair of Silverline Prelude speakers for their better bass and liked them, but missed the sound of the Omegas. So when I saw the Outlaw 1.5 Way Towers with their lower bass ability and better efficiency compared to the Super 3XRS speakers, I jumped on them hoping for the best. I am completely happy with them and their better bass and efficiency. I am driving them with a Dayens Ampino integrated amp that is rated at 25/40 watts at 8/4 ohms. The clarity and detail is simply stunning and very musical (not clinical). I should also mention for my tastes, I do not like running separate subwoofers in my stereo music system. I prefer the simplicity of two speakers hooked up to an integrated amp. I have finally found my musical nirvana with this simple setup. I have heard many systems over the years (I am now 60) and my current setup does it for me. By the way I have heard absolutely no "point source errors" of which JLM alludes to with my 1.5 Way speakers. Hope this helps.

All due respect, but that's just your guess. Not even your opinion having heard none of it. The tradeoffs you allude to are mostly in your imagination, the lower driver is crossed low enough that it's not going to have much effect on contaminating the point source, coherent sound of a single driver. The advantage is also a fuller sound because a .5 way design also eliminates baffle step losses, as well as greatly increased sensitivity and more energy in the bass range.
