Omega super 6 cabinet rebuild
« on: 28 Jan 2014, 08:00 am »
Dear all

I am new to this forum, just having purchased a pair of Super 6 XRS Alnico. These are truly great speakers with my small modd'ed Almarro. However the previous owner had sold the cabinets for some reason and kept the units, and they are currently mounted in a not very good looking cabinet. I therefore wish to rebuild the cabinets, and hope you will be able to help me with some data.

The DIY cabinet is a copy of the floorstanding model, which I believe is around 52 liters of size. The cabinets are now are non-vented, but bass is actually fine, which means that it is defined and playing low notes, but not what that much authority or moving of air, if you can say so. I do however wish to keep the cabinet size and built a 52 liter floorstanding cabinet, with inspiration from this - the cabinet for the midrange greencone;

I also wish to port the cabinet, with inspiration from the greencone cabinets - front port. Do any of you know the size of the port, which for obvious reasons are quite important, and furthermore do you have any suggestions for how much to dampen the cabinets - some speakers require heavy damping, others don't.

These speakers are rare in Denmark, and I consider myself quite lucky to have gotten hold of a pair. It also my first experience with full range, but I must say these are really good.

Cheers

Ah, sorry, a small mistake and I am not able to edit my post. I wish to build a 52 liter of cabinet to be mounted on a stand, more or less a copy of the SABA grencone design including the stand.

Cheers
Henrik

Hi hmtcph,

Thanks and I didn't understand. Do you have the drivers?

The 52 liter cabinet will work great. The main cabinet pictured with the green cones will work very well. You will need a 3" port. I really like the looks of this cabinet and reminds me of my Superhemp.

Thanks,
Louis

Hi Louis, thank you very much for your reply. The information was exactly what I was looking for, but just to clearify - the 3 inches are the diameter of the reflex port, but how deep do you suggest the port to be?

I have looking for the Thiele Small parameters on the drivers, but couldn't find any, though they are not needed as long as I have the size of the port, and data for the cabinet size.

I bought the drivers only - sorry if I was a bit unclear. For some reason the previous owner had sold the cabinets - they were in the monitor cabs, and placed them in a cabinet similiar to the XRS cabinet. Though playing in a non-vented cabinet, the drivers are seriously good, having bettered some far more expensive speakers in the midrange.

I will post some pics when the cabinets have been made, and I also very much like to look of the Greencone model. I plan to make a 'floating baffel' where the frontbaffel has a sort of waveguide hole. One concern is that the speakers in the current cabinet has to be placed very precise to create the image, and a waveguide hole can perhaps making the image even narrover, though I am not sure.

Thank you again for taking the time to answer my email.

All the best
Henrik, Copenhagen.
