When I play music from a hard drive through the BDA-1 and the BDP-1, at loud volume I hear a lot of distortion in the music.  This happens also to music from the thumb USB drive from Bryston.  Anybody else experiencing the same problem?  I have no problems when same music is played from a CD player.

I have not experienced any problems like this myself but I'd like to know more about the file that you are playing.  If you ripped the music yourself was it a lossless or lossy rip?  If you purchased the music file what format is it?  Comparing a low bit rate mp3 file to playing the cd would sound different and distortion could the audible result.

These files are WAV lossless files.  The music from Bryston is a FLAC file.  I am thinking perhaps there is a problem with the BDP-1 player.

I just checked the files that came with my BDP.  Very high quality files.  How is the BDP connected to the BDA? Can you try a different connection?  Can you connect the cd player to the BDA in the same way to compare?  This probably won't solve the problem but it might isolate it.

I am using the AES/EBU (XLR) connection with Synergistic digital cable.  Yes I connect the CD transport to the BDA-1 the same way (AES/EBU (XLR)).  I do download my CDs using DBpoweramp software.  I use 500 GB USB storage medium.  What type of files do you use?  Do you use thumb drives or a larger USB storage medium i.e 500 GB external drives?

I connected mine the same way using an AES/EBU cable from Bryston.  All my music is on a 500 GB portable hard drive.  It was ripped with iTunes as ALAC.  The files are on average 30 mb each.  What I did not rip myself I bought online as high-res FLAC.  Sometimes I use thumb drives.

I'm out of ideas.  Sorry.  The AES/EBU cable is the preferred connection method from what I've read and everything you've done sounds right to me.

I use ITunes and ALAC for my convenience.  There nothing wrong with using something else.  Maybe other use familiar with dbpoweramp can tell you the settings they use.

Mine works perfect for standard and hi-res flac files.

BDP-1 to Wyred4Sound DAC-2 with custom AES/EBU cable.

CD rips via J River Media Center, hi res rips via DVD Audio Extractor or downloads 《HDTracks》

If its only occurring when you crank the volume my guess would be the issue is else where.  My reSoning being that the BDP and BDA don't actually control the volume and simply outout a constaint analog signal from the BDA.  What is the BDA plugged into? Preamp or a surround processor?

Cheers,
Chris
