I just ordered the service manuals for the SA-XR25 and the new SA-XR50.

The Manual for the 70 is not yet available.

In a couple of weeks I should be able to offer mods for these receivers.

The 25 willl not have the voltage adjustable volume control of the 45, but it should be somewhat close in sound, after modification. The 25 mod would be around $675.00

The 50 will be between the 25 and 45, Cost, roughly $700.00 for HT.

These are just guestimates at this time.

The EU versions of the 45 and 25 should also be able to be modded. Roughly $700.00 It will not have the Jensen cap installed.

Right now it is taking between 4-5 weeks to get a unit modified.

Sound Differences?
Hi Wayne,

Just wondering what the differences are between the 45 and the 50 when it comes to sound?

It seems like you haven't done any of the newer models yet but didn't know if you might have some possible input.

Thanks

As far as I can tell the 50 should fall in between the 25 and 45. It does not have the full voltage controlled power supply as the 45, but the power supply is a small step up from the 25. I really will have to wait for the service manual to show up before I can say for sure. I do not know yet if the relay can be removed from the signal path in the 50.

Have the manuals arrived yet?  I just got my XR45 and it is quite a bit better than the XR25.  The voltage controlled volume seems to make the sound much cleaner and less "digital" sounding.  It also seems to have blacker backgrounds and smoother midrange just in its stock form.

I will have to start modding this baby to see where it can really go.

Just bumping this up to see how the mods are progressing.  I assume that when the new 70 is out you'll looking at it too?

And how about the new Kenwood?  If it uses a similar amp module (or the same one) might it be a good candidate for modding?

The mods for the XR-25 are listed on the website. I am waiting for the speaker binding post plates to be fabricated for the XR-50 mod.

I will consider modding the XR-70, when it comes out.

As to the Kenwood or the JVC, or any of the newer digital receivers, I would be glad to look at them to evaluate them for mods, if someone would care to send me one.

It might take awhile, though. I have started building new gear to introduce at the up coming Rocky Mountain Audio Fest.
