low wattage amp for unifield 3?
« on: 31 Jul 2013, 04:13 pm »
I am absolutely loving the sound of the Pass x250.5 with my Unifield 3s, but I may be moving into a NYC apartment where 1) I can't go near the volume level the x250.5 allows me to and 2) I may not have physical space for an amp that's as large as the x250.5.

If I have to get something a little smaller, how do you think the 10W and lower First Watt amps would do?

The other option could be a xa30.5.

I'm really hoping to keep the x250.5, but I guess I should start looking into options if I can't.

If you are looking to stay in the Pass family and don't have a First Watt dealer locally, call Mark at Reno Hi-Fi. Great guy to deal with, and he has a superb return policy. And super knowledge of the whole Pass line.

Another option would be to e-mail/PM Nelson Pass. He is very active on diyaudio.com or I imagine an e-mail to First Watt would eventually find its way to him.

Lastly, the 6moons reviews give a great overview of the FirstWatt line. Each new review contextualizes the amp being reviewed to other FirstWatt amps reviewed previously.

If you like Pass I think you might also like the Valvet A3.5Rs. They are small pure Class A 0NFB amps with huge power reserves. 50wpc into 8ohms.

Fantastic resolution with my u3s and they can easily fill up my 45sq/m bedroom. I highly recommend an audition.

Well I would certainly think you'd enjoy a smaller Pass amp but if you want to try tubes, I had great success with an Audio Reference 3.1 tube integrated with my VR5s -- it really was a synergistic match for pure musical enjoyment. Wish I'd kept it, even though my home in Texas is not really tube-friendly.

Thanks for the responses

I bought my x250.5 from Mark at Reno, so I know he's a great resource.  I just figured people here have more experience with the Unifield 3s since he didn't know much about them the last time I talked to him.

I'm not considering tubes and would like to stay with something in the Pass family
