Getting my first TT in a few days

Getting my first TT in a few days

A friend is giving it to me.  It is a Technics SL-1300.  Its been in storage for ten years, but it is coming with a AUDIO TECHNICA DR500LC (which I have no idea what that means).

I have a Sherwood Receiver from about 8 years ago....and some nice Cerwin Vega speakers.  What else will I need to get this up and running?

I don't know the Sherwood receiver, but if it doesn't have a phono input you'll need some sort of phono preamp. I would also recommend that you find a diy method of cleaning records. You should invest in a stylus force gage to set the taking force and there are downloadable protractors which allow you to check the alignment of the cartridge. I don't know much about your cartridge, other than it was originally equipped with a line contact stylus. Welcome to the madness of vinyl.

I ended up picking up a replacement cartridge as I have no idea how worn this one is.  I bought an Audio Technics AT-95E.  Read a few places online and here that it would be good for the SL-1300.  I bought a Phono Pre-amp, and have everythign ready to go.  It has a grounding wire and the phono-preamp has a place to put that.  I need to hook that up, correct?

I also bought a VINYL CARE SYSTEM made by RCA that has a woodhandled brush with some vinyl record cleaning solution.  Here's the player.

Hi Ethan25, welcome to Vinyl Circle.

I'm guessing that the DR500LC has the same motor as the 13Ea, if that means anything to you.  Equipped with an LC needle, it should be very nice indeed.

Welcome to AC and the vinyl circle! This is a great audio community and I hope you learn as much here and receive as much support here as I have.

I agree that you will need a stylus force guage. But this need not be spendy. There are some nice digital options on eBay and elsewhere for cheap. If you can't find any, I may be able to dig up a link (sorry don't have the time now). These cheaper digital gauges may be labelled something like "jewelers scales" and you will want one where the thickness of where you put the needle is close to the thickness of a record.

Not sure if speed is at all adjustable on that turntable, but if it is, you can also get a digital tachometer for pretty cheap on eBay.
