Any way of repairing a B200 cone?
« on: 11 Jul 2013, 03:21 pm »
I've had my prototype open baffles supported with a wooden dowel for longer than their MTBDAHF (Mean Time Between Dumb Ass Housemate Failure) and I now how a cone with a large hole in it.

Visaton tell me they can't recone the B200 so does anyone have any suggestions on whether it's worth trying to fix it or whether I should just relegate it to playing funny noises in an office environment?

I'm curious as to how bad it would be if you glued a piece of stiff paper on.

I've heard of fellows using wood glue and tissue paper on the back of the cone to reinforce the tear. Adding weight and mass to a cone changes the T/S parameters, but if you don't get carried away, it's sure beats spending the money on a new driver.
Plus, if you only buy one driver, it'll have a different number of hours than the driver on the other channel.

Best of luck.

You can easily repair a cone by gluing a patch to it. If the cone is a dry paper use Titebond III, if its poly or other use superglue. Put it on the patch only but get enough on there without drips and get it to the edges. You can make the patch out of anything similar. It has to be thick enough to hold well but not too thick. Balsa wood from a hobby store would work well. sand it or shave it until it's thin enough. Heavy paper would work or a piece of another blown driver. Use a towel or something to cradle the driver so the patch is at the bottom and parallel to the floor so gravity doesn't pull it off the repair site. Don't worry about color. you can carefully paint the repair afterwards. Do not use the driver for 24 hours after gluing. Have everything perfectly ready before you start. Its kinda a one-shot thing. Hold the patch on with your finger and light pressure until it sets. Good luck.

I am sure the methods described will work.

In a pure dumbass move, I shoved a screwdriver through a 6.5 cone last winter, when building speaker boxes for a friend.  I applied a dab of silicone to the cone, let it dry, and all is well.  Remarkably, you cannot hear a difference in the car between L and R to determine which driver was violated.

It made me SUPREMELY careful when screwing in drivers since!

OK, thanks all.  I'll try and post a picture at the weekend but it sounds like I might be able to rescue something out of it.

I thought I just seen Parts Express selling a fix kit.
Check with Steve Deckert at Decware. He also re-cones speakers .
