CD Tweeks...Improve Ripped SQ?
« on: 8 Aug 2013, 02:29 am »
Hi All,

I'm seriously considering coming over to the computer of music playback.  8)

All of my shinny polycarbonate and aluminum platters have had CD treatment done to them.

The process I use is:
1) Optrix Cleaner
2) Audio Desk CD Lathe with black edge marker
3) Nespa Pro 30sec treatment
4) Acoustic Revive RD-3 Demagnetize

So the big question is...

Does a treated ripped CD sound better than an untreated ripped CD?

Anyone A/B a standard CD to a treated CD after ripped to a hard drive?

Thanks,

Chris

I don't have personal experience, but I'd be interested to hear if ripping a CD then treating it causes any difference when ripped with a program that uses accurate rip for comparing checksums of files.

Exactly my thought!
Bit Perfect is perfect...right?

I ask the question since I had a conversation with a knowledgeable compu-phile who stated that the CD tweeks do make a difference.

Just looking for some other experiences.

My experience is that special procedures and treatments for ripping undamaged CDs are unnecessary. At this point of the game, it is simply an issue of data integrity.

It is only when the data is decoded by the DAC and starts its way through the analog circuits that issues come up that affect sonics. That's when you need to worry about the DAC, clocks, filter choices, RFI and all of the other gory details that audibly affect playback.

I know its not too hard to find others who will disagree so the above is only my experience. I've ripped around 5,000 CDs to my music server over the years and don't worry much about it these days beyond getting the tagging right. However, I did a fair amount of back-to-back experimentation some years ago before I had invested too much time in ripping my collection and was able to satisfy myself that there was no audible difference between the CD and hard drive versions, and that no special religious rituals were required to accomplish the task.

YMMV.

Unless these treatments are being used to repair a damaged disc, I'd be amazed if even a single bit on the disc was different after being treated.

It's trivial to compare the files from the rips, either directly or by their checksums. No need to A/B anything.
