Newbie seeking X-LS Encore Build Knowledge
« on: 28 Feb 2020, 06:06 pm »
Hello all,

Im new here and really know nothing about speakers. That said, I am diving into all threads about the X-LS Encore before asking any newbie questions.

Build:
X-LS Encore kit with crossover upgrades and tube connectors.
Flat pack by Peter. Not sure about cabinet finish yet.

I know that Peter guy. Pretty sure he makes good stuff. So does that speaker guy, Danny something. AKA, The Legend.

Along with my epic thread, there are others in the "GR Research Build Threads" sticky worth eyeballing.

You will enjoy the voyage. I did the same thing and am enjoying amazing speakers. Get lots of clamps!
I suggest using alligator test leads to mock up the crossover before soldering to be sure you got it right.

Ask questions. This group is generous with support.

Well, today I got a special delivery from Peter. X-LS Flat Pack is sitting on my office floor, and I'm wondering, what-the-hell did I get myself into! LOL!

I am reviewing (over and over again) Peter's YT videos and wondering what size parallel clamps to purchase— I have two 24" clamps already, but what other sizes do you all recommend?

For reference, in the video I use 2-12" and 4-24" or 30", plus a couple of 12" bar clamps to hold front and back while clamping with the parallel clamps. Parallel clamps are kinda spendy, but can be used a lot of ways. I guess it depends some on what projects might be in your future.

If you're looking to add to your clamp collection, I find the 12" fairly useful. If you were looking to add a pair to complement what you already have,  30" or so might give some future versatility. Longer than that just isn't necessary on a project this size.

FWIW, all the parallel clamps I have are Bessey, most bar clamps and pipe clamps Jorgensen. There are others out there, but most of these were purchased when the available clamps were fewer.
