Please give in ceiling speaker advice
« on: 9 Jul 2013, 02:19 am »
Hi all,

A buddy of mine is building a house.  The builder is proposing "truaudio" inceiling speakers for the LCR.

http://www.truaudio.com/products/4/6_Inch_Round/rev6-lcr2

I have no experience with this brand.  Has anyone heard them?  Do you feel they're worth about $350 installed each?

What other brands / models should my friend consider?

My guidance as to "go cheap" in the ancillary rooms and put the money into his main living room.  I also advised him to consider in walls, versus in ceilings for the LCR.  But I think aesthetics are pushing his wife toward the in ceilings arrangement.  That, plus he's on a budget, so value is needed here as every $ is competing with tile, carpet, windows, etc.

Please help.

Thanks, Bob

I have Martin Logans, so I'm naturally drawn to the Helos 12's @ $299 ea.

But I also think that the Golden Ear Invisa series is compelling.  The 525's are $249 ea.

Any thoughts?

Can't really help as I never heard of the company.  In the new place, which is done, but I'm not living in it yet, I have nothing in the main system as I tend to think all in-ceiling speakers are more or less going to be some sort of compromise and for the main system I have everything I'm going to use for 9.1 or 9.2.  For the bedroom system, I did all in-ceilings as well as for the outdoor ones on a covered porch.  In four other rooms where I'll have secondary systems, I did in-ceilings for surrounds.  The builder's subcontractor carried Sonance, so I selected those.  I have not listened to them but for the purposes I'll be using them and the frequency, I can't imagine regretting it.  It would be different if it were the main system.

I can't comment on the brand or model. I think most are made to spec by only a few manufacturers.

I would recommend if at all possible even at added expense to go "in-wall" if possible. If youre gonna make holes and spend money. I would at least try to get stereo fronts in the walls or on a shelf (even a sound bar).

If they just watch the news and a ball game now and then, it may not even matter. Get the cheapest cans you can find.

Bob
Take a look at the KEF in ceilings.  The new Ci200QR includes the tangerine waveguide.  I'm running the older Ci200.3QR for surrounds in a family room setup...it is an exceptional in ceiling with rather amazing bass response.

Overall, great sound for an in ceiling speaker; nice highs and mids.

The new ones run $350 retail, but can be found cheaper.

Thank you for the suggestions. I'll pass them on to my friend. I agree with the in wall comment.
