Placette Audio + Salks. Anyone else?
« on: 17 Jun 2013, 01:51 am »
Out of curiosity, any one else using Placette Audio passive volume controls with their Salks? I've been using the Placette RVC with my HT2-TL for quite a while and it has been a utterly dynamic and transparent combo. The rock solid imaging excites me every single time.

It's a unique passive that offers a constant input impedance with volume changes. It uses the very expensive Vishay S102 resistors. I've tried other passives that left me underwhelmed.

Placette Audio reminds me of Salk in a way: sold direct; superb quality but excellent value; not heavily advertised but has a cult following. And like my Salks, I'll be keeping the RVC for a long time.

I've never heard the Placette, but I've read good reviews about it. If i had the money I'd pick up the one that's listed on USAudiomart right now. It does seem to have a cult following much like my Audio Research 100.2 amp.

I've been very pleased with my Placette active preamp.  I've tried other preamps, but I like this one best because it doesn't add any sonic signature of its own into the mix.

What's the current setup you're using with the Placette?

It is funny that you are going the minimal way.  I use two preamps so I can modify the sound more! :duh:  I use a tube amp to give me that tube magic that works especially well with older recordings that were mixed for the tube sound.  In series, I use a room correcting preamp to minimize the room issues with the response curve.  More is better as the commercial says. :D

Hi Bob,
your system combination sounds like what im planning to go with.
So please dont mind me ask, what preamps and room correction device are you currently using?
For my self, i plan on going with the decware csp2 and emotiva umc200. The eml processor has great adjustbility for bass integrationand toning. The only problem is that emo seems have not perfected the software.

it works for my setup. Th RVC has only one input but since I'm only using a Ayre QB-9, it's just fine. Room correction is careful but judicious use of Real Traps on walls *and* ceilings.

I'm also using tubes --by Quicksilver. But there's nothing *tubey* sounding about them. This, from someone who's live with Salks and Class A solid state by Pass Labs for quite sometime.
