All the reviews I have read on the M51 state that it is phenomenal but a few state that it can be even better with something like these:

Audiophelio 2 -  http://www.digitalaudioreview.net/2012/04/nad-m51-digital-direct-dac-initial-impressions/

Off Ramp 5 -  http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/index.php?/topic/40613-nad-m51-listening-impressions/

So my question is why does one need a USB to SPDIF converter?  Is there a reason that I should not just go straight out of my Squeezebox Touch with coax?  In other words, isn't the Audiophelio 2 just for those connecting with USB?

Cheers,
James

Per TrungT's recommendation and others, I finally got around to wrapping Teflon plumber's tape around the fuses on every component.  On the two receivers it was noticeable but not huge.  On the bass amp/crossover similar but possibly bigger upgrade then the receivers.  CDP can't remember but I think it was just a bit better or not audible.

Biggest improvement on the Trinaural Processor, huge, I was surprised, bigger, badder (in a good way), more transparent, even possibly quieter, bigger dynamics, smoother, estimate 30-40% throughout, no downside for sure.

Might be worth trying on the M51 after it's burned in and you're familiar with it.  Pretty harmless mod, easily undone in a few minutes.

Correct.  If the source is a Squeezebox, there is no role for a USB to SPDIF converter.

Except that with the EDO app, you can use the Touch USB port as a USB out for the digital audio signal, and playback files up to 24/192 in native resolution.
