X-LS Encore vs X-SLS Encore
« on: 16 May 2013, 06:35 pm »
Danny,
What advantages, disadvantages, improvements would one see in the X-SLS over the X-LS for frequency response, detail, sound stage, etc...? Looking at the plans, the SLS is sealed, correct? How does this affect the performance?  I would have to build stands if I build the X-LS, so I am thinking maybe the X-SLS would be the easiest way to go for me.

I guess what I am really asking is should I build the X-SLS as per you drawing or build the X-LS according to the X-LS drawing and just add an empty space below to build it as a tower?

The two speakers are the same and sound the same except for the low end extension. The rear ported X-SLS uses the optimal ported box size for the woofer. As a stand alone pair it is the way to go. And there is about a 6" tall space at the bottom of the box that can be sand filled to help give the speaker a solid foundation and good stability.

OK, I see the port on the second page. Guess I missed that on my first look. How low will the X-SLS go?

From this page on our website: http://gr-research.com/x-lsclassickit.aspx

"The X-LS was also released as a small floor standing version using a larger optimal ported enclosure. With this version the -3db down point is 45Hz and the low end roll off is very smooth. This version was released as the X-SLS."

I lived with the SLS for a few years and unless your a bass addict, they will fill modestly sized rooms(200-300)sqft with nice articulate bass. I crossed mine over at 60hz to a sub because heavy metal needs to be played LOUD!!   :thumb:
