first OB speaker
« on: 13 May 2013, 09:54 pm »
Hi

I want to try to make a OB speaker with what I have at hand.

I have for each speaker:

2 wavecor woofers 12" sw301wa01 Qt=0.59 fs = 28 hz Z = 8 ohm
1 Visaton BG 20 wich I plan to replace with a SEAS FA22rcz
1 scan speak revelator tweeter
1 vifa D27 tweeter

planning on making the bafflen like 120 cm high 50 cm wide at the bottom and 35 cm wide at the top

Any idea for at simple crossover that will give me an idea if this OB is something fore me?

best regards

uwe

For OB experimentation, I don't think you can beat a DSP unit... but maybe start with putting the BG20 on a baffle and "just see" (listen) ?

Hi JohnR

Actually I have a pair of Hypez A2.100 DSP amps but I can not get them to work :(

My plan was to remove the wizzer cone  og the BG20 and use the two tweeters for just the highest octaves > 5-8000 Hz

That should work... I suspect you may decide in the end to crossover lower than that.

I'm not sure there is really such a thing as a simple crossover for a 3-way OB... You'll need active for at least the woofer section with those drivers, they look fine but OB for woofer doesn't usually lend itself to simple implementations :) You could try a first-order crossover between the mid and tweeter, and something like a miniDSP 2x4 for the EQ and crossover between the woofer and the mid/tweet section?

Others here have done passive designs for OB, hopefully someone else will chime in :)

With what you already have in hand,
you can build something very similar to Linkwitz Orion.
Those woofers would work very well on a M baffle like this:
http://www.linkwitzlab.com/LX521/Description.htm

But you will have to go active at least for the woofers
because they won't match the SPL of mid.

And yes, no whizzer please.

Going DSP route would allow you to EQ the rising response of the mid driver as well.
If you go DSP + EQ way, you will probably need a higher excursion mid-woofer than the Visaton.

And if you end up with a working DSP,
You might also consider B&G Neo10 and Neo3 combo for the upper section.
That is what I am working on these days.

Hi

have been a little busy at work lately.

But removed the wizer cones on the BG20 last weekend.

With the setup on the baffle I am planning to use the mid will be at ear hight, pros and cons for / against that that?

best regards uwe

This is a very interesting project, I helped a fellow circle member build some OB subs and they turned out great! Good luck!
