3.7 jumper(?)
« on: 12 May 2013, 01:42 pm »
Last year I auditioned a friends 3.6's and noticed that they came with the resistors and that the mid and highs had 2 sets jumpers.
Do the 3.7's only have one pair of jumpers(one for the highs)for each speaker.
Reason I ask is I bought a 6 month old pair where are immaculate and I see that they only have one jumper per speaker(high side).
The manual doesn't say anything about pairs of jumpers for each speaker, thx.

I'll ask to see if they did a running change to the model.

I asked my seller and he is going to check with the audio outlet he bought them from.
Also mentioned when breaking in to run the jumpers on the mids and the resistor on the highs when breaking in.
Progold all connections,fuses,U's,cables,fuses,just cuz.
More serious listening tonight as last night maybe an hour as was late, today we work to pay for them LOL.

No running changes per Wendell:

No, there is one jumper (for attenutation) for both the midrange and tweeter on the 3.7 and 20.7.

Are you just missing one of the metal jumpers, is that it?
If so, you can just run some speaker wire or similar if you're not going to run a resistor.

Thanks for the feedback,I thought perhaps one set was missing(no biggie).
The seller going to check with the dealer to see if he has them.
Now I'm running them with a resistor on the tweets and jumpers on the mids, sounds great, but nice to see just having the jumpers on to hear the difference.

Okay, at first I thought the plate was different but it's just jumpers didn't make it along with the speakers.
I can't honestly say if there's a difference but some people swear that replacing the staples with speaker wire makes an improvement.
I can say that I don't like the resistors as they make it sound funny to me.
Others will disagree.

I also prefer mine without the tone choking resistors.  It is better to adjust at the preamp stage, either by tone controls. If like mine, that has no tone controls, with tubes, or change cap values to achieve the desired results.

I feel that using resistors at the speaker is sort of like veiling the performance.

Thanks guys, will be getting a jumper wire or another U.
Have to still say they sound real good so far, can't remember the hours the seller had on them 200 or so.

Jim

I am forced to use 1 ohm resistors in series with my (T-IVa/IIIa) ribbons, as my ribbon amp won't cope with the 2 ohm load the ribbons offer.

They may well "veil" the HFs - although I can't hear any such effect - but what the reses do do is reduce the ribbon output by a couple of dB.  (Which I can compensate for in my 3-way active setup.)

Andy, maybe "Veiled" is too harsh, but less restriction to the signal chain in the speaker the better in my eyes.  I suggest that the OP try them without the resistors.

Using the resistors on my 1.7s made the sound muffled.

Same here. Thought I liked the change at first, but took them out a couple of days later.

Whether you want to use the resistors or not is going to depend on room acoustics. So it isn't really a matter of right or wrong, although Magnepan suggests that if you need more than a 1 ohm resistor you should add HF absorption to the room instead.
