Desperation is the mother of …. a New/Old HT System

The story is so sad it hurts to write about it.  I sent my RM-30M’s back to VMPS for the woofer upgrade.  Two of the three packages arrived back as promised, but one was lost by UPS.  After a few days they said it was put on the wrong truck and was going to Maryland, not Southern California.  Somehow, it got delivered to someone there and is now in the process (I hope) of being sent back.  It looks like the process will take a total of about three weeks.  Amazing!.

So, not wanting to be without a HT system, I pulled together a couple of elements not normally associated with cutting edge, modern VMPS speakers.  The photos show the rather different elements.  The New – VMPS RM-30C driven by a 400wpc Cinepro amp.  The Old – a pair of 1970’s Pioneer CS-801 speakers with horn tweeters and midrange, driven by a AES SE-1 Signature 300B amp- 8wpc.

How does it sound?  Very interesting.   My Integra Research Pre/processor has a direct mode sending signals only to the R&L speakers for stereo and shutting everything else off.  Wonderful big sweet sound with a warm smooth midrange and big booming bass.  Doesn’t image like the RM-30’s, but you won’t either if you were 30 years old.  Integration in surround modes was tough to do because of the huge tonal difference and the amount of bass from the Pioneers.

Is this the best of the Old and New?  Probably not, but fun while you are waiting for the Brown truck.
