Solder question
« on: 6 Apr 2013, 07:44 pm »
I am mounting a T Amp board in a wooden box. The input and speaker connections I will be using are "Gold" color. Will conventional solder work with this gold wash plating (or whatever metal it actually is)?

Thanks,
Lacro

I'm thinking "Yes".
However, I've found cheap jacks to be harder to soldier to than the more expensive ones.
I'll leave it to the smart guys can explain why that is.

But if the jacks contain any non-metallic materials, you're more likely to melt them if the metal (or coating) is cheap compared to better quality parts that can be soldiered quickly.

Hope that helps.

Any "electronic solder" is fine with the gold or other plating. You will however, need a decent iron in the 40-60W range, to heat the big parts...John

You can always try to get as much wire pressing on the gold contact as you can, for best connectivity.

Solder does conduct. But copper is better, solder ideally is just to hold things together even though it often becomes the primary conductor in some small spaces.
