Where to buy a car battery?
« on: 14 Apr 2013, 02:17 am »
Time for a new battery on my Honda CRV. Where is a good place to buy them these days? I was contemplating Walmart. I am not a Costco or BJs member but I think I can get a free 60 day BJs membership.

Look for sales online at places like Autozone, Advanced Auto Parts, etc.

Go to yellowpages.com.   Whatever you do, don't buy a cheap-ass battery for your car.

There are only a handful of major auto battery manufacturers and the majority are built by Delphi, Exide and Johnson Controls.  Johnson Controls is the largest North American OEM battery manufacturer and makes batteries for Interstate, Sears, Autozone and literally hundreds of other brands.  Johnson Controls also acquired Optima of Sweden more than ten years ago, which is considered one of the best (and most expensive) batteries.

Most of the time you get what you pay for and I would buy a premium battery from whichever manufacturer I chose.  Besides better quality plates and construction, the premium models almost always gets a longer warranty with both better complete replacement and prorated schedules.

If you live where it's cold get a battery with lots of cold cranking amps. It's true that there's only a handful of battery manufactures, but quality control varies for whomever they're making them for. Stick to brands like Interstate. My favorite.

DoubleJ , My truck went dead and I was lucky I made the parking lot where I live. I had to call triple AAA. The guy who came asked me how old my battery was and then gave me the history of how long they last and did a test that was more technical than when you have a physical. He sold brand new batteries that are guaranteed for I think it was 3 years right out of his truck. If it fails within that time they come out and install a brand new one. I didn't have to bum a ride to the auto parts store to get a new one. It was no crap shoot. you get a bill of sale you can keep in your car,and you'll never get stuck in a situation with no power. Your just a phone call away. I'm cheaper than Jack Benny but it was worth the few extra bucks. It might even be 5 years that they guarantee it for. Their insurance is the cheapest I found also,liability....good luck...Mark Korda

I used to get those batteries in Arizona.  The warranty was great, because a battery didn't last 3 years there.  Here in New England, I replaced one battery in a car since 2001 when I moved here.  And I don't think that needed to be be replaced.  The lack of intense heat helps batteries.

I went to Walmart and got an battery an Everlast which according to Walmart is made my Johnson Controls and looks like the twin of the Interstate battery I took out of my CRV.

I have a AAA card so if I am every in the situation of a dead battery I can just call them but I doubt I be replacing this one again. It's a 1999 with under 100K miles on it so it can run for another decade but I'll be tired of it long before then.
