Drop cable? Streaming ready for prime time?
« on: 2 Apr 2013, 09:14 pm »
I noticed another thread starting to cover parts of this, and wanted to see if we could get a dialogue going here on this.

I have not yet made the leap to cut the cord (or satellite feed as the case may be) around cable TV.

I understand that there are options out there via Roku, Netflix, AppleTV etc.

What are the free options?
Are there decent live sports coverages available?  I like hockey and golf, so I'd miss that stuff if i could not watch it.
Are shows available in real time?  IE if my wife wants to watch the new Gray's Anatomy the evening it is on cable, can we stream it that night?

Thanks guys!

Depends. We cut the cord with cable. I find I rarely turn the TV on anymore. We watch over the air TV or stream netflix. Kids exclusively watch Netflix. As far as Sports go, I mainly only watch football games which are mainly on over the air TV. So it was fairly easy.  :)

Streaming is a mixed bag. Many shows available for streaming are delayed from when they originally air. The NHL has an app which I think you can stream hockey games by paying for a season, but it may be blacked out in the local area. No idea on Golf.

I downloaded Playon today and it's awesome. Just about all of the decent satellite channels and all for $49 lifetime, per current sale. They keep programs online for 4 weeks which means no slavery to broadcast schedules. With this and my Roku I have about everything for $10 a month or so. With sports I'll have to watch games on the playon replay channel or go to the sportsbar. You do have to download it to your computer and have it on while streaming.

I've never heard of Playon before you mentioned it...does it have full channels or just some clips from the websites it has listed? I've been thinking of picking up cable again for the baseball season...I just want one channel. Kind of sad.

It has full episodes and clips from previous episodes. I didn't notice if they support baseball. They have a store with plug-ins for purchase but I haven't visited it.

I'd say cut the cord & use the $$ saved to go see games live at the ballpark/stadium, way more fun!
