All I can do is.....
« on: 19 May 2013, 12:46 am »

I was talking with a couple of guys at work - one was a 17 year old.

One of them said they went to BB and listened to Dr. Dre's Beats. "They sound great!" The kid agreed. I said, they're too bass heavy. "Oh no, they sound great!" they both reiterated.

 :duh:

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

My grandson uses a pair of them. He likes them and enjoys music through them. He wasn't all that impressed with my AKG701s. Good enough for me.

Not surprised someone who likes the Dre's would not cotton to the AKG's. Those two headphones are about as different as you can get. I have to say the AKG's aren't my cup of tea either, but the Dr. Dreadfuls are just horrible, a prime example of the adage that "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public." They also are poorly made; we sell them at the store where I work. Wait and see how they like them after they fall apart; I expect those AKGs will still be working fine in 2023.

You are right about that. The "music" you are talking about is seemingly mixed and mastered with a "boom car" audio system in mind. That makes it perfect for the Dres which seem to be aiming for a similar sonic signature.

The first set of "Executive" Dre's we put out lasted less than a week before literally falling apart. The Mixrs at least seem to be fairly sturdy, a first for Dre's.

The depressing thing is that Dre has 64% of the over-$100 headphone market category. That raises concerns that quality brands like Sennheiser, Beyer, and AKG will start emphasizing blingphones too, which is already happening with the AKG Quincy Jones models and the Beyer Custom One (reportedly a good set but I don't need a cover plate with a pic of a '56 Chevy on it.)

Those Beats by Dre are a joke. I think most people who know audio pretty much get that.  The younger generations think they are great because they are just cool and the way they are marketed. If you really want a laugh search youtube for "beats by dre stress test" It is basically people destroying the headphones. I do not really care if people want those  beats piece of crap but it does bother me a little bit that someone will spend that amount of money on a set of headphones only to get what they do get. They also have beats audio on cars and phones now too. Personally, I would not buy something just because it says beats on it.

Its amazing what the general public will buy based on "being one of the hip people". I read a lot because of my disability (stuck inside way too much) and I see reviews and recommendations everyday for stuff I know for a fact does not sound good and just today I read a "10 Best Headphones" article on a major online website and didn't recognize 4 of the top 10 they picked. I did see 4 I knew and the others were from OEM's or companies that I haven't seen mentioned in any headphone post here or anywhere I frequently read from. I'm talking hifi names from yesteryear that I thought were gone, kaput, zilcho. Just my humble opinion.... :thumb:

Hi Mr. Taratatapoulos and all Audio Circle members.
If it was me, I would never ask on Audio Circle public forum what king of disability
eclein has.
I would maybe ask him via a PM
and even then, not sure I would do that, but that's me.
Mr. Taratatapoulos if you want to sell your amplifiers why don't you PM JohnR and ask him to be a participant.

TechRadar has a ten best recently, today maybe, but they could have done much better. They said their selection was based on sound quality, and I suppose most of them would qualify as hi-fi, but nowhere near best in sound quality in that price range. To be fair, they probably have to sell stuff to make their feature have some commercial value.

I read that.
The only headphones that i found worthwhile on that list are the Grado and the Momentum. The others are too mainstream :duh:

My disability beside being a knucklehead is Peripheral Neuropathy-caused by chemotherapy and alcoholism, pretty severe unfortunately, its in both legs waist down and arms mostly involving my hands...sucks, very painful and keeps me from driving which is the worst thing of all I've found...LOL.
Not one to give up (I'm only 55) I walk everyday I can with cane assistance, trying to stay out of a wheelchair. Totally killed my abilities to play drums at any kind of level that is satisfying. I used to be pretty good back in the day now I use a Native Instruments Maschine Mikro II and create stuff with my fingers on pads- its a blast really. So much fantastic stuff happening in computer music, amazing how much I can do with the Mikro II and my laptop.  :thumb:

Noseyears- they were the only two I saw also that I knew sounded good....
