HELP- Bugle one channel 40 db down
« on: 24 Jun 2004, 02:56 am »
I purchased a bugle kit  used just before a recent move.  It was assembled and supposed to be in working order.  Hooked it up today to find one channel way down (40db) or so.  Other channel is fine.  Swapped batteries, cables, and isolated to one channel of the bugle.  All chips seem to be seated properly.  Any ideas on how to troubleshoot and rectify?

I do have a multimeter, but I am a complete novice at using it.

thanks to all

40db down means no amplification on that channel.  Have you tried swapping the left and right chips?

I'd say a bad cable is the obvious thing, but you seem to have tried that.  If you've swapped cables, then something is broken.  Look for a bad solder joint.  With one channel working, that eliminates a lot of issues.

If you can't find it, send it to me.  I'll fix it.

I'll take a more thorough look at the entire board tomorrow.  I will reseat all chips and check for obvious cracks in joints.

I'm in Longmont, CO.  Can I call on BradJudy if I turn up stumped?  Also, many thanks to jh for your generous offer.

thanks

I realized my post was completely off base.  I've played with headphone amps too much where three chips is L/R/G.  In this case, each chip is a dual op-amp doing a portion of the amplification - no left and right chips.  Definitely inspect for poor solder joints.

While I can build things like this (and do have a Bugle), I'm not that great at troubleshooting electronics.  If you want to try a known working Bugle in your system, we could swap briefly.

I am a bit closer than Jim in Hawaii :D

If you and Brad have no luck with troubleshooting the Bugle, feel free to contact me and ship it down to Littleton. I would be happy to take a look at it.
