I finally had that A-ha moment last night. I received a used pair of VR-33 speakers on March 11th. Since then, I was having a lot of trouble dialing in the bass. The bass was there, but it was very low output and ill defined. I had moved the speakers from 4 inches to 30 inches away from the wall with very little difference in sound quality. I kept asking myself why I dropped a lot of coin on a speaker that I had never heard, and also I kept thinking how my other speakers which I still have sounded so much better. I started questioning my hearing ability because everything I read about these speakers claimed excellent bass.
The A-ha moment came while I was looking at the speakers from my listening chair in total disgust. I thought about the heavy drapes halfway behind both speakers and thought could it really be that simple? I moved each speaker 6 inches sideways so each speaker now cleared the drapes and it also added a extra foot of distance each speaker was in relation to the other. I held my breath and played "Magic Bus" from The Who, Live at Leeds. Keith Moon's hard drum whacks was played back perfectly with so much authority that I could feel it in my gut. From there I played Rumors by Fleetwood Mac, it was the 24/96 HD Tracks download. I was in Heaven with the sound quality. I got totally immersed in the music. My listening session ended with the SACD Pink Floyd, Dark Side Of The Moon. I have listened to Dark Side for over 40 years, sometimes twice a week (it's my all time favorite) and I can say with all honesty that what I heard last night was the best sound ever in my home. It's almost a day later and I am listening to FM radio on the system and I am still smiling.
I forgot to mention the speakers are 6.5 inches from the wall and 9 feet apart. The soundstage is wall to wall, way beyond the speakers.
