Physics of audio enclosures

I have to admit that I never thought there can be a complex science behind speaker building.  :oops:
Softwares made life easy for my generation and there is one for everything.I was playing with speaker building softwares for last 2 weeks and finally got into something real.MJK worksheet. Now there is all those plots that are staring at me. I am trying to learn what all those parameters mean or how the ideal graph should look like. What does all the terms in there means in terms of quality. I guess I need to learn some physics :o.
Is there any  resources /books which will explain these Geometry parameters to a beginner.Especially various SPL plots and enclosure and baffle impedance principles?

After just a few minutes of perusal, while there is some good information with solid scientific foundation contained on those pages - there's also a LOT of opinion and supposition prefaced as fact.  I particularly like how he concludes this page - http://lenardaudio.com/education/06_x-over_4.html - with "Realism can only be achieved through 4-way active technology."

Yes, I applaud the effort to transfer knowledge.  But the fact that he's doing so as a means to market his own product is quite transparent.

For an introduction you might try Ray Alden's book.

These two books are mid level technically. They are pretty good introductions if you read them several times. If you really want ot get into it you really need an engineering background; plenty of calc, physics and circuit theory. Knowing those topics you can then study acoustics on your own.


Beranak's Acoustics text is the best comprehensive engineering introduction in my opinion.

We always have to take such recommendations with a garin of salt. My purpose was the introduction to those terminologies and that page explains them.Thank you Martin I will check them out.
