Jim,

It was great to see you and Frank again in Chicago. My jaw was dropping all right every time you switched from SS8 to Silk. The SCST are amazing as well.
Cannot forget Frank's electronics- Fetvalve 600R has plenty of power to run the speakers including Silk. The bass from that combo was unbelievable.

Seriously that small a change going from the SS8 to the Silk?  Wow...

It is pepperwood burl, part of a very small batch we ran across a while ago and may never see again.  There are 44 pieces spliced together for that pair of speakers.  And the finish was hand rubbed.  So the finish on this pair cost half as much as the speakers themselves.

That's what I was wondering too! I'm sure that puts them out of my price range, but I'd like to know more.

I'm sure it depends very much on the program material.  For a studio vocal recording, I doubt that there would be much difference at all.  But if it's a big hog organ going full tilt in a church with lots of ambience, the difference wouldh't be very subtle.

well, what can I say now?
I listened both speakers playing  some big band recordings with a female vocal and a double bass, and also some drums.  No pipe organ, nor electric bass guitar.  One thing- Frank's switch box levels the output of the speakers, so the sensitivity did not matter in this case. So, I did not hear much difference between Silk and SS8 as Dennis said.  I actually asked Jim about it, and his response was like Silk had softer presentation (that is why they picked the name), while SS8s are more resolving, full range speakers. Jim could probably explain it better. I think that SS8s are slightly more detailed and accurate in the midrange.  I did hear SS8 reproducing very deep and clean bass notes on the other tracks. Cheers!

Well I've got my order in for the SS8's! I was taken back by what I heard, and they truly were gorgeous. The sound was amazing. I heard many other speakers that day at the show, but was only impressed by 2 others. None of which sounded quite as good as the SS8's. I was hoping to compare the SS10's and 12's, but Jim didn't have them on hand. It was a real pleasure meeting the maker as well. Now I need to sell my HT2-TL's and the wait begins once more!

The Silks were a great speaker regardless of cabinet size! I also fell very quickly for the SS8's. Luckily I don't need/want that kind of low end from a L/R. However those one off SS7's? on the marketplace look VERY interesting.
